Black 47 perform James Connolly

Another band you've likely never heard of, performing one of their best songs. A great Irish/American/Rock band. I can't say enough nice things about these guys.

Booker T & The MG's perform Time Is Tight

So cool...

The Everlys perform Bowling Green

My fave Everly Brothers song. Reminds me of sunny afternoons in my beloved Colorado back in '67...

Wanda Jackson performs Fujiyama Mama

Almost forgotten now, Jackson was as hard rockin' as any man. The Queen of Rockabilly. Essential.

Clarence Clemons performs Paradise By The C

The Big Man!

more fake Beatles rip-offs

Pretty interesting. The "John & Paul" record sounds like the song was written by Sonny Bono, (and I'm not sure it wasn't...). The "You Know Who" sound a bit like the Mindbenders. The Guess Who remind me of early Manfred Mann. That first album by them had the coolest cover - a couple dancing the jerk in an aluminum foil covered room! Ow!

great quote...

Nothing will replace my aluminum foil hat...

Michael Martin Murphey performs Geronimo's Cadillac

Another great song. Murphey has become one of the great performers of cowboy music, (another passion of mine). Before that, he was a sort of hippie country singer and this is one of my faves by him from those times.

Canned Heat perform On The Road Again

So cool. Great song to drive to late at night. A classic.

Little Anthony & The Imperials perform Goin' Out Of My Head

Another essential from one of the great American singers.

The Beat Farmers perform Bigger Stones & Hollywood Hills

One of the best and coolest bands - ever. Essential.

Paula Cole video for Where Have All The Cowboys Gone

I always liked this song.

The Beatles perform Nowhere Man

Beautiful, just beautiful....

Life in DC

First of all, this has gotta be the easiest title in the newspaper world. All you have to do is keep it on hand and fill in the blank: "D.C. __________ is getting worse." Go ahead, put in anything - crime, the school system, the fire department, the rescue squads, the hospital, the police, public works, the library system, city services, etc., etc., ad infinitum. It's all true now, and will be truer this time next year. And this article is SOOOOO DC - they actually spent $93,000,000 (!) to make it worse. Classic. They didn't get rid of the Lorton Prison, they simply renamed it the DC Government. The Olympian Ideal of Incompetence, Laziness, Corruption and Ignorance.

Cthulhu in Claymation!

Happy Birthday Majel Barrett!

Today is Iwo Jima Day

Happy National Chili Day!

Joy Division perform Shadowplay
Rock'n'Gloom. Perfection.

Al Stewart performs Year of the Cat

One of my faves. 30+ years ago. A night just like tonight, bitterly cold and damp, sloshing around Gtown with Roger and Margrete. Mr. Smith's, Desperado's, Winston's, Cafe de Paris. Too many tom collins and the fog rolling in...

Steely Dan perform My Old School
Whoa No! William & Mary won't do. Amen, Brother....

Johnny Maestro performs The Worst That Could Happen

It's a cold and dreary night here at the Manor, and I've run out of bourbon. The mind turns sour, and this song seems appropriate...

just another day in the District....

The Bangles video for Hazy Shade of Winer

A light snow has fallen on the Manor, and this seemed appropriate...

Stealers Wheel perform Star

Great song. An almost-forgotten hit by them. Another band that should've been bigger. That's Gerry "Baker Street" Rafferty on vocals...

David Essex performs Rock On
Nice sound. His only American hit. For a month or two in late '73/early '74 it looked like he'd be the next big thing. Oh well....

The Chesterfield Kings cover 99th Floor

So cool. One of the great cover bands, (probably the best...)

Dionne sings Walk On By

One of the great pop songs, sung by one of the best. (The Stranglers did a great rock cover of this too...)

The Four Tops perform Baby, I Need Your Loving

Fantastic Motown Sound. Essential. The Four Tops are so much cooler than most people figure...

Robyn Hitchcock video for The Man With The Lightbulb Head

Syd Barrett's spiritual heir. One of the most interesting rockers going...

Jethro Tull performs The Teacher

Great band and song.

The National Toy Hall of Fame!

The Patty Duke Show theme

One of the great televison themes. Classic - and with the weirdest line found in any song, ever: "A hotdog makes her lose control". No Bible passage has ever come close to securing such curiosity and scrutiny. The best minds of my generation have pondered and analyzed it. Rock on, Patty!

Last Man - the end of WWI

And time lopes along. It must be kind of surreal knowing you're the last of your generation/group. And the way history is taught and appreciated (NOT), it must be kind of sad knowing that few will have any idea what you and your companions went through, what your lives were like, etc. More people know who Britney Spears last fucked, than know anything about World War I, or it's consequences.

Happy Birthday Bertholt Brecht!

Flawed genius.

Happy Birthday Jimmy Durante!

An interesting guy. Does anyone dislike Jimmy Durante? He's been likened to a favorite uncle, and I guess that's pretty good; but I just don't think I've ever read (or figured out myself) quite what made him so popular. He's just this guy you enjoyed hanging out with. A little magic.

You can have your Dead Sea Scrolls, your John the Baptist tomb, your Da Vinci manuscripts - THIS IS AN IMPORTANT FIND!

new documentary about the Code Talkers

The Eagles & The Cellar Door - a little history
(Thanks for the link, Erik!)

The Door was a pretty interesting place. I certainly would call it intimate. Hell, I'd call it claustrophobic! The tables were about the size of my mousepad. Around these were placed chairs that had been designed by anoerexics with a penchant for sado-masochism. But the shows were great, (if I could only remember most of 'em...). John Cale gave a wonderful performance that I still remember as one of the five or six best I've ever seen, Kinky Friedman was there with all the Texas Jew Boys jammed on the tiny stage; and I saw an early performance by the Urban Verbs that was absolutely riveting. Fun stuff....

Alfred Hitchcock would be proud...

(Thanks for the link, Roger!)

Behind Glen Echo...

I just got a copy of the DVD - Behind the Mask, The Rise Of Leslie Vernon, (thanks Roger!). It's great! A "mockumentary" of some film students interviewing and following around a mass murderer in the mold of Jason/Freddy/Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc. And it supposedly takes place right here in our own little Glen Echo, Maryland, (although it clearly wasn't shot there). The film features dozens of in-jokes and cameos and has some creepily funny scenes dealing with a film genre that's ripe for satire.

Happy National Freedom Day!
