Ritual

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHfDDvxa8Ec

Sly and the Family Stone are one of my favorite groups.  I consider them to be absolutely essential to our culture.  And my fave song by them is this, Hot Fun In The Summertime.  It was released in the Summer of '69, and since then I've made it a habit to listen to it at the start and end of each Summer.  It forms the perfect bracket to the season.  Over forty years, now.  And so another turn of the wheel occurs.  See ya tomorrow....

Steely Dan performs Reelin' In The Years

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTDRd0Z0O4o

And while we're dealin' with graduations, this was going through my head and the radio waves at the time.  Movin' on...

fanivd for Seals & Crofts performing We May Never Pass This Way Again

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vd6zYQPCgsc

Ah, as I'd mentioned before, this time of year evokes so many memories.  My own high school graduation was a blur - frankly, I couldn't wait to get out of there - social loser, shy, iconoclast, subversive - these are not Senior Prom material.  But over the years I see the news reports about the proms and graduations, and the kids for whom it's important, and this song comes to mind.  For better or worse, (and for me - much better), you can't go back, kids.

'Tis Summer...

Last night, saw the first firefly of the year; First air quality warning of the year; First Heat Advisory Warning of the year (it'll be in the mid 90's and is supposed to feel about ten degrees warmer than that).  Welcome Summer, in all your heat-sapping, insect laden, sweat-drenched, malarial fury!

More turns to the mystery of Rudolf Hess

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1392208/Hitler-gave-ahead-Rudolf-Hess-peace-mission.html

I tend to discount most of the supposed wild tales and mysteries surrounding WWII, but there are several important ones that I believe have real legitimacy. And of those, the major one is the flight of Rudolf Hess. To make a long story short, there appears to be circumstantial evidence pointing in either direction - an unhinged fool on a silly romantic quest, or a real chapter in secret negotiations between Britain and Germany. The main difficulty is that we'll probably never know for sure. Churchill was no fool, particularly when it came to self promotion and historical record. He would have kept a very tight hand on any documentation that he felt affected his legacy, and would have had it destroyed the moment it was no long needed.

The dark side of online gaming - prison labor???

As a serious and life-long gamer, I consider to be amazed at the fanaticism (and money) that some of these online gamers exhibit. I'm also deeply envious of the game designers, who have managed to get around narcotics laws and create something that is (apparently) just as addicting, and just as lucrative.

The experiment in gender

http://www.autostraddle.com/canadian-parents-raise-gender-neutral-baby-by-not-revealing-its-sex-90186/

Actually, I'm not sure I see this as anything but a more publicity-laden example of what at least a few parents have been trying since the early days of "Women's Lib" - trying to break some of the traditional gender mold, etc. I'd also point out the child rearing practices of the American and British upper class in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, at least for boys, tended towards what we view as the feminine. This was sometimes taken to extremes, (read Patrick MacNee's autobiography for an example).

Get a life!

How much is that nazi in the window?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1390340/Dr-Jan-Bondeson-Nazis-tried-teach-dogs-talk-read.html

Sigh. My friend Dennis originally sent me this link a few days ago, (Thanks Dennis!); and I didn't publish it. As I explained to him, the reason why is because my bullshit detector is really buzzing away on this one. For one think, I've spent most of my life studying the War, as well as studying Fortean and psychic phenomena and belief systems - and I've never heard even a whisper about this before now. Frankly, I'd like to see some peer-reviewed documentation.
Secondly, it's quite possible that people were doing this type of "research", but they were either delusional crackpots or professional liars and con-men. Germany was full of these types before and during the rise to power of the nazis, and hitler and himmler supported them in various ways and at various times*. Talking dogs for the SS sounds like just one of many schemes floating around at the time, and a particularly silly one, (if the report in this book is true). I just don't think this thing has legs - if it did occur, it was VERY small potatoes on the fringe of research and certainly didn't go anywhere, (puppies debating voting for Hindenburg - give me a fucking break...). It wouldn't surprise me if this whole thing was just a joke/scam.

*At one point there were TWO "hollow earth" theories being promulgated within the nazi heirarchy.  One, that we were on the outside of a hollow sphere, the other that we were on the INSIDE!  These guys were off their meds.

WOW!

(Thanks for the link, Mike!)

a nice day..

As most of you know, Autumn is my favorite time of year. But as I grow older, the period right now begins to rival it. Those days between May Day and the Solstice seem more and more valuable to me, I just love the way the light is, particularly the long shadows it casts in the early evening. The bug count is still low, (at least around here), the plants are all fresh and not yet forming a jungle. One can just start to get some fresh produce at the farmers' markets, and a small flood of pleasant memories come seeping out of my brain.
It's a time when school would be ending.  Sweet freedom! And it usually meant a vacation to Colorado.  Just those two events alone would be enough nostalgia to make it a favorite time for me.  But there's a lot of little chapters left, even so.   In my childhood it meant picking strawberries out at our friends Christine and DeEarle's farm - long since paved over in the suburban sprawl.  Or sitting on my Uncle Harry's front walkway, watching the sun go down, with its last rays bathing the Rocky Mountains in the background.  It could mean hunting for box turtles, or pic-nicing at Mt. Vernon.  Later on, it might be having my friend Millie drive all the neighborhood kids up to 7/11 (with her Brand New Drivers License!) for Slurpee's; or playing Cleeba (a local game) at night and keeping the whole area awake with our shouts and taunts.  And later still, this time meant canoeing on the C&O or traipsing through Gtown; heading out to hear bad folk music at the Iguana Club, or getting lost with my friend Rick on some Hunter Thompson-esque sojourn in search of the next party.  Some nice days.
Here's some tunes.

http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/248115/Should-Lord-Haw-Haw-really-have-been-hanged-

Sigh. I do not believe in punishing children for what their parents have done. Nor do I expect them to necessarily turn on their parents, regardless of their crimes. So I will excuse this poor woman. But it's all rubbish. Haw haw got let off lightly, death was too quick and not nearly painful or humiliating enough. I couldn't care less how many passports he had, nor what nationalities they were. As for his supposed British "patriotism" - well yes, as long as you fit his aryan ideal of what was British. Otherwise, he'd just as soon shoot you. It's sort of amusing on how perspectives work out. The people who think that they're leaving the earth today think that they're the fortunate ones. And yet, I believe that those of us who are supposed to be "Left Behind", will be much better off in their absence....

Wargamers VS Somali Pirates

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20110517/tc_afp/usmilitaryitinternetgamespiracy

Of course, I'm rather old fashioned about these things, the way you defeat raiding is by killing the people doing the raiding, and those that support them, and anyone benefiting from it. This technique is called warfare, it's very serious and ugly and shouldn't be taken lightly or without the most serious consideration. But when it is entered in it must be done so with eyes wide open and a goal of victory. Everything else just leads to heartbreak and failure.

Dealing with nazi monsters in one's past

http://www.freep.com/article/20110515/NEWS07/105150658/Nazis-grandchildren-probe-past

I feel terribly sorry for these people, who have committed no crimes, and I also admire them.  There is so much denial and hiding throughout history, both personal and grand-scale.  I prefer at least trying to meet it head on with honesty and a level head.  That's what many of these folks seem to be doing, despite the immense emotional costs.  I'm a big believer in the old adage about those who ignore the past are more likely to suffer repeats of it in their own lives.  I feel much safer in the company of these Germans than the vast numbers of their countrymen wallowing in denial, subterfuge and lies.

The Old Ways die hard in Germany

http://www.thelocal.de/national/20110511-34961.html

Interesting, isn't it? The whole case rides on the seeming technicality that this alleged human being is a German citizen, based on a decree from hitler, not any postwar government. So, the next question is - are all of his other decrees followed with equal fidelity and enthusiasm? If not, why not? Jews were denied citizenship at the same time and by the same monster; is that decree still considered in German court cases? I never believed that Germany was truly de-nazified. there's overwhelming evidence to the contrary, for those willing to go beyond the usual American/German/NATO propaganda of the 50's and 60's. But I'm surprised that the children and grandchildren want to continue with this crap.

Mr Zimmerman digs the hole deeper

http://www.bobdylan.com/news/my-fans-and-followers

So, the Chinese are liars.  And then none of them know who he is or what he's sung - but he sells out concerts there, regardless.  Right...  And he just happens to randomly play songs from place-filler albums, rather than the tunes that made hims a superstar - just by accident, eh?  How....convenient......
Nope, I'll stand by my original assessment.  In fact I think this vapid non-reply to the critics backs it up.  Mr. Zimmerman is a genius.  No doubt about it.  But he's also a self-promoting song and dance man who will do whatever he thinks is necessary to make a buck.  Even lie.  Even to kowtow to authoritarians for more millions to pile onto the stack he already possesses.
Depending how you count it, this is either the third or the fourth "Dylan has sold out" episode that I've lived through.  It's time people figured it out - he's never sold out, because he never bought in.  He just can write like he did - and do so perfectly.  People can't believe he doesn't believe.  Grow up.  Just enjoy the tunes and the poetry, leave the needless hero worship behind.

The beginning of an explanation for Gulf War Syndrome

http://www.usatoday.com/news/military/2011-05-11-Iraq-Afghanistan-dust-soldiers-illnesses_n.htm

Fascinating.  A childhood friend of mine actually died from this after the first Iraqi War.  I admit that some of the symptoms that some of the troops complain of could (possibly) be diagnosed as psychological reactions to the stress and fear that combat induces - and were.  The original term was "hysteria" which the early psychoanalysts incorrectly and damningly categorized as a purely female phenomena - thus creating a major stigma for any men, particularly troops, suffering from it.  And so we got a whole bunch of new catch phrase describing the same thing, but in more "manly" terms:  shell shock, battle fatigue, etc.  But the stigma still remains.  But this new research sounds like it's going to lead to a serious review of earlier denials and diagnoses.

Stories like these are now a daily occurence.  I am clearly unqualified to be a school administrator. I could never muster the pettiness and wussiness necessary for the post. An entire profession characterized as little-hitler nannies, ninnies, bullies, commissars, snitches and spoiled brats; so thin skinned and orchid-like in their reaction to anything outside of their own petty little bureaucratic fantasy worlds that it's a wonder they've survived long enough to be a thorn in the side of anyone who has a real life. Pathetic.  My contemporaries and I could never get through grade school (much less high school) today.  Apparently, we're too tough for 'em....

fanivd for The Urban Verbs performing The Angry Young Men

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeVy2f5TR_M

Another wonderful band from DC. The Verbs were an art rock band who actually managed to get a national record contract on WB, and then were totally ignored. This was practically my theme song in '80. I'm no longer young, nor angry; just old and bitter....

http://www.sheepandwool.org/

We had a fun time at the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival, as always, (Thanks, Rick & Susan!). But my gods, the place is getting crowded. There were lines everywhere and for everything. You couldn't even get into many vendors' booths for all the people milling about. And if you did squeeze in, you might well get stuck there for ten minutes trying to get back out. I'm amazed at how popular knitting (and the associated activities like dyeing, spinning and weaving) has become in our oh-so-hi tech age.

Explore the Night Sky

http://skysurvey.org/

This is a wonderful!

"Nick Risinger traveled the world, using a robotic camera mount and six air-cooled cameras, each fitted with their own lenses and filters, to capture the entire night sky in one image; the largest full true-color sky survey. The project took a year to complete, and Risinger logged 60,000 travel miles. The final image is made up of over 37,000 individual photos, has a resolution of 5,000 megapixels, and took months to piece together. Risinger says, 'Travel was necessary as capturing the full sphere of the night sky brought with it certain limitations. What might be seen in the northern hemisphere isn't always visible from the south and, likewise with the seasons, what may be overhead in the summer is below the horizon in the winter. Complicated by weather and moon cycles, this made for some narrow windows of opportunity which we chased through the remote areas of Arizona, Texas, Nevada, Colorado, California and Oregon.'"

An interesting addition to the debate about the French resistance during WWII

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/world-war-2/8495632/Britain-masterminded-French-resistance.html

And once again, we see how complicated geopolitics can get. I'd point out that much anti-nazi resistance (even in France)was Communist based and Russian directed, and yet that is frequently ignored in Western histories of the conflict. There are subtleties to what happened, and how it's reported.

One of the last war criminals

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-13292464

Another footnote to the War.  Hungary's alliance with Germany (and this dude's apparent pride in it) is itself a microcosm of the many ironies and contradictions that warfare and geopolitics can stir up.  The alliance was always shaky and pretty forced, (Hungary didn't want to end up like Yugoslavia when it rejected an alliance with hitler).  Despite the alliance with Germany, Hitler hated the Hungarians; never trusted them.  When it became obvious that they were putting out peace feelers to the Russians, he even had the leader's son kidnapped to force his resignation (Operation Panzerfaust - a fascinating commando operation).  My personal suspicion is that if the nazis had won the war, the Magyars would have found their safety and influence steadily chipped away at, until they were treated as the Slavs were to be - enslaved, and their country absorbed into a greater reich.

Seger doesn't seem to garner much respect or enthusiasm these days, but I've always been a fan, since I first heard Ramblin' Gamblin' Man, back about a thousand years ago. A journeyman rocker carrying on the Chuck Berry tradition, and adding some beautiful ballads as well. With osi whacked, it'll be interesting to see what, if any, reactions will consist of.  Needless to say, DC is going to go through more rounds of security measures (as I'm sure places like NYC and London will as well).  We'll see what happens.  It's going to be a hassle, regardless.

Got Him!

News is still coming in, (and I am still digesting it), but it is nice to hear of osi's violent demise.  Hopefully, it was slow, painful and without dignity, but I suspect the SEALS are too efficient and professional  to allow sentiment to enter into their activities.  One and all of the people responsible are to be congratulated.  It is a great day!  I will add, speaking just for myself, that I subscribe to the idea that vengeance is best served coolly, if not ice cold; and there should be more courses served.  There are ten years of "missing time" and a huge compound to be accounted for.  A lot of people, (read:  Pakistanis) who knew about this dude, and supported him handsomely.  We're not talking peasants, we're talking the ruling circles.  They loved him.  They deserve to share his fate.

Happy Birthday to Miracle On 34th Street!

Premiered on this date in 1947.  (Why they didn't go for a Fall./Winter release will always puzzle me).  One of my fave movies.
