Armageddon - the world's strongest beer
Interesting, but I'm somewhat doubtful that something like this meets the definition of 'beer' at this point.

DC's Drag Queen Race delayed....

Alive & Well

It's still too dark to see how most of the neighborhood is doing.  But we here at the Manor survived Hurricane Sandy with no more problems than a loss of power for about four hours.  It is quite cool outside, (upper 40's), and there's still a light rain falling, (that makes it about 30+ hours of constant precipitation), but only a gently breeze is left to remind us of the gusts from last night.  The worst was around 10-11PM, (when our power went out), I'd guesstimate those winds reached 70-75mph.  At any rate, we appear to have dodged a bullet.  There are a lot of roads closed due to flooding and downed trees, power will be out for some folks for awhile, etc.  but I think the area did much better than expected.

The Geneva Tsunami|newe|10-29-2012|3970448|35096511|

A fascinating (to me) article on science explaining history.  And frightening.  I had the great pleasure of visiting Geneva once, many decades ago.  My Father had spent quite a bit of time there and showed his family the city, and I loved it, (and have always wanted to return).  It was attractive and cosmopolitan, in a DC sort of way, and I felt at home there.  And it had Davidoff's, probably the world's leading tobacconist. I was a pipe smoker at the time, and remember buying several samples and feeling quite swank and sophisticated, being a grizzled 17 year old....  And I purchased and smoked my only Cuban cigar, there.  I cannot remember the brand at all, I'm afraid, and didn't think a whole lot of it, (but that may be unfair, as I don't consider myself much on cigar knowledge or compatibility).  At any rate, Geneva was cool.

The Old Guard VS Hurricane Sandy
I always encourage visitors to DC to visit Arlington, and particularly the Tomb of the Unknowns.  For me, one of the most impressive sights in the area, and as close to the word "Sacred" as I get.

Happy Birthday to the Internet!

Frankenstorm, continued

Well, there's a light rain that has started here at the Manor.  But so far, no big deal.  On the other hand, all of our weather reports are literally screaming the deluge is hitting tomorrow.  Almost everything is closing down as I type this - the Metro, trains, buses, the Federal government, all the school systems, etc.  I remain agnostic and somewhat cynical as to the accuracy of all of the death and destruction predicted for our region.
Over the past thirty years the media has devoted vast resources to weather reports, and between that and our modern 24 hour a day news cycle, these clowns have to do something to justify their jobs and expenses, so every snow flake becomes an earthshaking event to be trumpeted about for days before and afterwards.  I'd guesstimate that 2/3 of the time it's much ado about nothing.  Perhaps this week will be different.  But I'll wait and see....

Inflatable Cthulhu Beard!

So, all of our weather drones are predicting the worst storm of all time will begin to hit us in about the next 30 hours.  They have already written New Jersey off as totally lost, (insert Jersey joke here).  As for the rest of us - we'll see what happens.  The Manor is, as always, prepared.  Have already (regrettably) taken down all of our outdoor Halloween decorations, for fear of them getting blown away in the gale force winds that are predicted.
The grocery stores are, of course, already besieged and are being denuded of any and everything.  The only serious question is in regards to the power grid - will it go down; and if so, for how long.  DC's is becoming increasingly precarious and unreliable in storms.  It is no long unusual for some neighborhoods to go without for days or even a week.  Like I said - we'll see what happens...

And the stereotypes receive a boost...

Ray Bradbury talking about books and libraries

I absolutely identify with and love this article!  For me, it was the old Queen Street branch of the Alexandria Library.  I started going there, (and got my library card), when I was four.  Saturday mornings, my Mother would take me in for a haul of books, mostly Dr. Seuss and dinosaurs.  Later on, the city purchased a book mobile that came by much closer to the house.  It parked in front of the local Baskin Robbins, so I lucked out like a bandit - ice cream and books in a single shot!
