Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale...

I sympathize with the main thrust of Fischer's article, about the lack of music in District schools. But his example brings up one of my pet peeves. When it comes to being the National Anthem, the Star Spangled Banner stinks. NOBODY knows the words to the damn thing, and no one has the voice range necessary to sing it. And it's just about a single obscure battle to save Baltimore, Hon.
No. What we need is a song that everyone knows the words to, that anyone can sing, and that has a subject matter near and dear to our hearts. There's only one song that matches all of these criteria - the theme song from Gilligan's Island. Oh, you're laughing at me; but just think about it for a sec - you know the words, and so does everyone you know. I think infants may be born now knowing the words, it's so embedded in our DNA.
Nine tenths of the world's population probably has never heard of Baltimore, much less Ft. McHenry. But I bet equal numbers know of Gilligan and the Skipper, (the show is in syndication throughout the globe, and has been for decades). This is a winner...
