Glenn Brenner - an appreciation
http://dc.metblogs.com/archives/2006/01/remembering_gle.phtml
The kindest thing I can say about pro sports is that I have absolutely no interest in them. I can say virtually the same thing about what passes for TV newscasts these days. I doubt I've watched one in nearly ten years. We are now expected to take entertainment seriously and news as entertainment. I can't stomach it. But there was a time when things were a little more tolerable. News was serious business, and sports was just something fun. I still didn't think anything of it, but one guy, and one guy alone, could get me to watch - Glenn Brenner.
I confess to being somewhat surprised that in a town full of sports fans and tech wizards that there isn't much about Brenner online. Which is a pity. The man was a wisecracking genius at holding your interest - poking fun at himself, the games he covered, and his fellow newscasters. And apparently a genuinely nice guy, which came through every broadcast.
Normally, media people don't do a great deal for me. There are a few locals who've meant something over the years, but only Willard Scott comes close to Brenner, as far as I'm concerned. I am still saddened by his death, which occured on or around this date in '92, and was really personally affected by it when it happened, something that almost never happens.
You mention to an old-time DC resident the Weenie of the Week or the Football predicting Nun and you're guaranteed to get a smile. There are still Glenn Brenner stories circulating around this town, a few are in the post here: http://dc.metblogs.com/archives/2006/01/remembering_gle.phtml
And here are an all too few moments on YouTube:
