The Dog Days Begin....

For me, and many others, they really begin on July 5th. I would be far from the first person to point out that there's something vaguely depressing about Summer after Independence Day. I think it goes back to childhood - a slow and hot glide towards September and the controls of school, with shortening days and the dulling of all the freshness and anticipation that was wrapped up in May and June. But the farmer's markets now get interesting. I'm looking forward to serious gorging on watermelon and silver queen corn.
