post-war fantasy map

Another little tidbit from WWII. Given that the Russians were going to effectively absorb Poland (no matter what), I think it would need some tweaking. One possiblity that I've always wondered about would be along the lines of breaking up the old Reich and even some of the neighboring states. One would (re)create Prussia, Silesia, Frisia, Jutland, Alsace & Lorraine, Bavaria, and perhaps some of the central prinicpalities. For all of the talk of "Greater Germany" there have always been divisions between North and South, East and West, etc*. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened under such circumstances.

*Despite the usual historical tales about Bismarck, it was really Hitler who truly unified Germany, bringing Prussia and Bavaria more tightly into a national government and structure.

  • It would have saved everybody a lot of trouble, and accomplished a rather neat form of historical justice, if we'd thrown all the Germans out of Schleswig-Holstein and Niedersachsen and established Israel there instead of in the Middle East.
