Yes, he could be an arrogant and hypocritical jerk, but Wayne definitely touched something in this country. Like a Norman Rockwell illustration, "Duke" might not have been representative of America, but he a lot of people felt he was. (And when given a chance to really act, he could do so - he's marvelous in The Searchers).
