dealing with evil, the legacy of WWII

What's interesting and tragic to me, and what may never truly ever be known for sure, is that I strongly suspect that these old monsters weren't worth it. There's little evidence of a successful British/American/nazi infiltration of the Soviet Union after 1945. All the battlefield evidence suggests that German infiltration of the Soviet hierarchy was pretty damn weak. Sure, there may have been some civilian stoolies in the conquered territories, but they'd be of little consequence in the great game of Cold War espionage. It was all for naught.
What may be in play had less to do with espionage and more in the rather naive faith in insurrection. It's well known that quite a few of the minority subjects of the Soviet empire were willing to work with and fight for Germany, once again a case of desperation or naivete guiding people's actions. This resistance was fierce at times and there were remnants after the war, (the Ukraine was not fully pacified until 1955!). I'm wondering if the that wasn't the cause for British and American collusion with nazism. These were men who had contacts with resistance groups in places like the Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia, Moldavia, Georgia, Uzbekistan, etc. We may never know for sure.
