Help Save The Pristine Widlerness of Virginia's Route 1!

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/21/AR2009072101807.html?hpid=sec-metro&sid=ST2009072102730
one can debate the various merits of Virginia selling off its ABC stores. I, for one, am always amused that the citizens of the Commonwealth consider drinking and gambling so evil that tax dollars should be spent monopolizing them. But the reason I posted this article isn't the debate on liquor sales for roads, but the objections of that silly old git, Potts, on page 2 of the article, arguing that liquor stores had ruined Route 1 in Maryland. Yes indeed! What a rampant eyesore and danger zone that is, as opposed to the trackless beauty and natural wonders of our own Route 1! I don't know where to begin in citing its many attractions - the transvestite hookers in Old Town, the endless grime-covered miles of run-down fast food dispensaries, gas stations, chop shops, and check cashing grottoes. Every parking lot is full of illegal immigrants sharpening their machetes for that night's Wild Hunt, vans selling rugs with matadors printed on them, and someone hawking electronics "real cheap" out of the back of a station wagon that's constantly moving. Yes, thank god the liquor store down there is state owned! I wouldn't want to ruin the neighborhood and bring in a bad crowd...

(I wish to apologize to my good friend Peter, to whom Route 1 was once a cherished home. The "Bates Motel" will live on in our hearts and in legend, Pete....)
