Up On The Roof...
So, here are some photos of what I'd written about earlier - one of our neighbors is growing pumpkins on their roof. I can't see the back side, but assume that somewhere up there they've placed large pots for the plants to root in, and the vines have now travelled over the top onto the front portion of the roof. It looks neat, but I'm somewhat suprised that it doesn't get TOO hot up there for 'em to survive. Anyone heard of this type of gardening before?

Neat! In answer to your question, I have not heard of using portions of your roof for edibles per se, but whole rooftop plantings as a method of both controlling heat gain as well as managing water runoff is a well established practice in many places, and popularity is increasing here in the States as a 'Green' building method.
You and Linda will of course need to grow whole bunch of plants so as to be able to carve 'Happy Halloween', one letter per massive gourd, on your roof.
After all, it may have been your neighbor's idea , but there's no reason you can't kick his ass with it.

Just catching up opn some of your posts, and you lauded Bela Lugosi.
Vincent Price told the story that he and Peter Lorre went together to Bela's wake.
Leaning over to get a better view, Vincent was cracked up when Lorre muttered, "Shall we drive a stake through his heart to be sure?"
The other mourners were not amused.

Probably the result of last years Halloween pumpkin being tossed up on the roof. The vines would trail up and away (over the roof) and with that many large oak trees, I'll bet the gutters are full of nutrients. I had corn growing from 2 of my rain gutters last season. Got quite tall. I assume the birds deposited it there.
