There have been serious doubts cast upon his claims.  It seems almost romantically fitting for a stage magician that he should be surrounded in clouds of doubt.  I'm not in a position to judge, either way, (although the very respected WWII historian Jim Dunnigan is, and credits Maskelyne's claims). The fact remains that it's a great story.
