Another example of how complicated the politics of WWII could get

I would point out that much of this encouragement of Russian collaboration was done either tactically, (ordered by generals in their particular sector), or somewhat clandestinely from hitler, (himmler was always playing around with ideas of an "international crusade against bolshevism", etc. At the same time, he was laying out the plans for the enslavement of many of the very people he expected to join the crusade - consistency and logic were not virtues in the third reich). Adolf was quite unflinching in his disregard for non-Aryans and is on record mocking some of his henchmen's flights of fancy with other ethnic groups. I also suspect that much (though not all) of the collaboration talked about in this article featured peoples who were actually minorities within the Soviet empire, rather than "pure" Russians, and a lot more was that mix of fear and opportunism that anyone wishing to survive in such a mess is tempted with. Like I said, it gets complicated.
