I would add one other point. People from the outlands always complain about DC - and they're right to. It's full of loathesome and arrogant shits. But, with a few exceptions, they all come from somewhere else - elected, or tagging along with someone who was, or just naturally drawn by the greed and power. And us residents have to put up with them too - only on a more direct basis.
The very nature of government and society dictates this, but it's political - not geographic. When people complain about DC and its spoiled hubris, it is simple: you sent them here to create and nurture it.
