The Mt. Vernon Monster

Actually, I believe that this little mystery WAS solved shortly thereafter.  It was a hoax.  I seem to remember it was a guy with a reel to reel tape player that he'd recorded animal noises on, (I think one might have been a parrot).  He then slowed down the tape, and went driving around the community at night blasting the resulting growls out of his car stereo system.
