And for those of you who can't imagine me in a sarong - well, you'd be right. I can't imagine it, either, (besides, I suspect that such a sight might violate some sort of bio-warfare treaty we have with the Russians). DC is blessed with several great songwriters and performers, and my friend Karl Straub is one of the best. His old band, The Graverobbers, were one of my all-time fave groups and released several excellent albums. And Karl continues to write, perform and grow as an artist. My friend Ralph runs one of the best restaurants in the region. Laporta's is located on the West end of Old Town and features what I'd describe as traditional and nouveau Italian cuisine. The calamari are to die for at this place. The best I've ever had and you are required by law to order some when you visit. In the past, I've also mentioned that Ralph is one of the most vicious and treacherous players of the game "Diplomacy" who has ever lived. Be sure to order a table with a chair in the corner, and watch your back...
Stella Schindler is another old comrade from my days in the record store biz, and she's been making great music ever since. Her latest album is wonderful, I'd describe it as Appalachian Gothic. Check it out.

Brian is an old workmate of mine who is in several local cover bands, including Smoke'n'Mirrors and Hit By Pitch. His emphasis is on the 60's, an era in which he is a Trivia Master, so of course I'm a fan. Andrew is yet another member of the record store diaspora, and he's now one of the main guys running our own City Paper, an essential part of the DC scene and a wonderful source for the never ending soap opera of our (real) mayor, Marion Barry.
