alien civilizations and the billion year technology gap

http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2009/11/the-billionyear-technology-gap-could-one-exist-the-weekend-feature.html

An okay article, but I'm unimpressed by the need to quote an astro-physicist on our chances of surivival through the 21st century. Even if I might agree with him - who the hell is he? And how does his work give him any more "quotability" on this than anyone else? In fact, his particular concentration would argue to me that he has no idea what he's talking about. I'd be more interested in some of the more sophisiticated studies coming from sociology.

  • However many planets there are that have the potential to produce a techological civilization (probably very few, given all the conditions that have to be right for complex life, as opposed to mere bacteria, to evolve), some one of them will be the first to actually do so. The first technological civilization to appear will overrun the entire physical universe in much less time than it would take another such civilization to evolve somewhere else -- thus pre-empting all the others.

If we weren't the first, we wouldn't even exist at all.
