A fascinating tale from WWII. I do rather wonder if the tank really did fire on a u-boat, however....(I can't imagine that it was kept with ammo loaded on, nor what such an action might do to the deck of a ship hauling it).

sounds plausible to me ... the tank firing wouldn't hurt the ship. The M-1's recoil was not that bad and it had a 120mm main gun vs the 88mm of the Tiger.
Being loaded ... maybe. Would not be that hard to load quickly once they saw the U-boat. The gun would do some serious damage to a U-boat.
