Serenity Preview!

I talked about this a few months ago. Serenity was a failed sci-fi series that Linda and I fell in love with after watching the DVD's. I consider it one of the best series of the past 10 years. It has that special quality of having a cast of characters you actually care about. Watch the first two episodes and you'll be intrigued; by the fourth, you'll be hooked.
At any rate, now we can look forward to a film - and I just know it's going to be great. And I think it's going to lead to the resurrection of the series.

Interesting. I tried writing in what I thought was a light florid style about Spring flowers, etc., but it still came up as 97% Male. I then wrote a way-over-the-top paragraph about one soldier disembowling another in combat and that came up 160/59 chance of being female. I have yet to submit a story of a soldier violently disembowling a flower...

The Return of Harryhausen!
The 8th Voyage of SinbadEntertainment Weekly recently spoke with action director Rob Cohen who revealed new details about his planned live-action adventure "The 8th Voyage of Sinbad" project for Sony Pictures.
Keanu Reeves will star as Sinbad the sailor, the legendary character from The Arabian Nights. In the film, set in eighth-century China, Sinbad and his shipmates embark on a quest to find the Lamp of Aladdin. Along the way, they meet a beautiful empress and battle fantastical creatures as well as a rebellious Chinese general who threatens the kingdom with his supernatural powers.
Cohen looked up effects genius Ray Harryhausen and said, 'I really would be honored if you would be with me on this, since none of us would be here without you.' What Ray understood in movies like 1958's The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad was how to do action-fantasy-adventure at a time there was no CG. So he's coming out of retirement to be the creative consultantfor the film!
Cohen thinks Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) is the one for the job of the empress, and he's already talked with the likes of Jet Li, Djimon Hounsou and Hayden Christensen for roles as members of the crew. The film is aiming for a January start of shooting date and is aiming for a PG rating with the MPAA.

Happy Birthday Uncle Tenoose!!!
Hans Conreid was always one of my fave character actors. He played Uncle Tenoose on the old Make Room For Daddy show, was one of the stock voices for the Rocky & Bullwinkle Show, played a Communist bellhop in the under-rated film, The Senator Was Indiscreet, and hosted the brilliant and far ahead of its time "Fractured Flickers".

ESSENTIAL Music
I just discovered this site, and I don't think I can really do it justice describing it here. The guy's hobby is going out to junk shops and finding the weirdest most bizarre recordings ever made and putting them on his site as mp3 files - one per day. It's just incredible, much more unusual than I can describe.

The BBC series, Yes, Minister, is one of my faves (as well as its successor - Yes, Prime Minister). And the main reason for that is the character of Sir Humphrey, played by the brilliant Sir Nigel Hawthorne. He is the penultimate political animal and bureaucrat. I can't think about this show and his antics without cracking a smile. You can put down those books about public administration and political science; if you want to see how government really works (and why), this is the show to watch! Hawthorne and his equally brilliant co-star, Paul Eddington, give the viewer the best half hour education on how things run that you can get. Regretably, they are both no longer with us, gone to that giant ministry in the sky. They and their show are missed by all true fans of society and how it works.

Happy Birthday Eric Burdon!!!
I've written before how much I loved the music of Burdon's first band, The Animals. In the old neighborhood, they and the Rolling Stones were the two bands that you just HAD to listen to, (reflecting the cold, hard streets of Monticello Park ;) ). "It's My Life" is almost a part of my DNA makeup, and more than once that tune has gone through my head when facing a tough situation or choice. "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place", "Sky Pilot", "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood", "San Francisco Nights", all classics. And let's not forget "Spill The Wine", his funky, trippy excursion with War. Happy Birthday Eric, you overfed, longhaired, leaping gnome!

Spanky & Our Gang reissue!!! The complete Mercury recordings

I always loved these guys. Everyone always compares them to the Mamas & Papas, and I suppose that's understandable (hell, for the M & P reunion tour, Spanky replaced Mama Cass, so who am I to argue). But I think there were significant differences. They never had the coolness quotient of the Mamas & Papas, but were every bit their equal in harmonies and quality. Where John Phillips primarily drew from a straight folk-rock angle, the Gang also used pop/jazz, vaudeville and cabaret. The rock cognoscenti never really took to Spanky, the vocals were probably a little too coy and old fashioned on many of the LP cuts. But there's also a sophistication to many of their tunes. "Sunday Will Never Be The Same ", (my personal fave) is a wonderful pop tune with some of the saddest underlying lyrics within that genre. If you've ever lost someone close - this song will remind you of being with them. "Like To Get To Know You", would have been cool on anyone else's album. And "Lazy Day" ranks up there with any summertime song. On your next compilation tape/CD/download just put it between the Temptations "My Girl" and the Rascals "Beautiful Morning" and it'll be June. I also rank "the Klan" highly. Most songs about them are filled with anger of fear. Spanky & Our Gang treated them in a much more fruitful manner - poking fun at their ignorance and terrible fashion sense. You'll never treat them as serious humans again after hearing a line like "And I look so high and mighty in my pointy hat and nightie". A very neat band.
