C'mon guys, this is how I was taught to write, back in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades. Telling me that grammar should be changed because of what a bunch of hack American newspaper reporters* do is like arguing that criminals should decide what the prison rules are going to be. You'll get my comma when you pull it's keyboard key from my cold dead hand....

Back from C'Ville

Had a wonderful time down in Charlottesville this weekend, (Thanks, Carol!). They have an awesome farmer's market, where we discovered two wonderful new food dealers - Babes In The Wood and Simply Cheddar. Also went to Crozet for the best pizza in the State, as well as exploring a nice new book store there, Over The Moon Books. Then, back to C'Ville for a stroll along the downtown mall and the usual array of used bookstores there, (Daedulus, Read It Again Sam, etc.)  Fun stuff!!!

http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/looselips/2011/06/23/gray-responds-to-arrest-of-reporters/

The (Very) Friendly Skys

http://andrewsullivan.thedailybeast.com/2011/06/pilot-fail.html

Fascinating. I know that the airlines used to literally advertise their flight attendants as concubines, but in this day and age, it's incredible to hear it confirmed. The usual corporate spin will occur - "one bad apple", etc., but you don't get this kind of conversation going unless it's part of the culture.

Krispy Kreme - AND HEALTH?!?

http://blisstree.com/eat/krispy-kreme-wants-you-to-be-healthy/

I pretty much agree with everything the writer of this article says.  And I'd add a bit more - I think it's silly for K.K. to try this.  They're going to spend a small fortune retooling their shops, and I suspect the returns will be minimal.  No one who is even modestly serious about eating yogurt is going to go there.  They're striving for a market that they'll never conquer.  Better to go in the opposite direction, like Arby's did, and proudly promote yourself as this fat and cholesterol mecca, and let the quadruple bypasses fall where they may.

Wuss Alexandria and the war against fun

http://www.alexandrianews.org/2011/06/fireworks-banned-in-the-city-of-alexandria/

It's always amusing to see the gross and primitive hypocrisy displayed by bureaucrats and city fathers. There's no mention here that for almost my entire life, Old Town was the location of the warehouses for Interarms, the largest independent war merchant in the world at that time. Two blocks' worth of explosives, guns, and other nasties, all cosily nestled amidst the colonial tinderbox of our cobblestoned streets, and with less security than you'd find at the average store of the GAP. Don't tell me about sparklers, you wussies....

http://www.backstreets.com/clarence/

I was just listening to Greetings From Asbury Park last night. As many of you know, at this point the E Street Band and its music is a part of my DNA. This is not a happy day for me. There was a wonderful publicity shot taken during the Born To Run sessions that's one of my favorites, (and became the album cover). It show Bruce, guitar in hand, leaning on the Big Man. That pretty much says it all.

Interesting

On the one hand, given the location, I assume the dude would have been using Coors beer to put the fire out. On the other hand, since Coors is little more than yellow colored piss water, I'd of assumed that that would have worked in putting out the flames. So this must of been someone who actually enjoys good beer! A tragedy.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post_now/post/report-person-taken-into-custody-near-pentagon/2011/06/17/AGX7xbYH_blog.html?wpisrc=al_commuter

This is still an ongoing story, hopefully it will not wind up as serious as it was initially feared to be. The traffic around NoVa is hopelessly snarled right now, besides this incident, there were at least three other major traffic incidents around. I actually had to head over to an area about 2 miles from the Pentagon this morning. But between luck, a lifetime knowledge of the roads and having grown up watching Vanishing Point, I was able to make it there and back with little problems.  As for the millions stuck in traffic, still, it's gonna be a problem.  Their bleached bones will be lining the roads for years to come.

Another example of how complicated the politics of WWII could get

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2003413/Soviets-supported-Christian-crusader-Nazis-World-War-II.html

I would point out that much of this encouragement of Russian collaboration was done either tactically, (ordered by generals in their particular sector), or somewhat clandestinely from hitler, (himmler was always playing around with ideas of an "international crusade against bolshevism", etc. At the same time, he was laying out the plans for the enslavement of many of the very people he expected to join the crusade - consistency and logic were not virtues in the third reich). Adolf was quite unflinching in his disregard for non-Aryans and is on record mocking some of his henchmen's flights of fancy with other ethnic groups. I also suspect that much (though not all) of the collaboration talked about in this article featured peoples who were actually minorities within the Soviet empire, rather than "pure" Russians, and a lot more was that mix of fear and opportunism that anyone wishing to survive in such a mess is tempted with. Like I said, it gets complicated.

I do congratulate this man, and it's certainly a remarkable achievement. But I'd be curious if the Olympics might not have rules that would prevent him from competing. As the article mentions, there are possible advantages in the use of legs for archery, (I seem to remember tales of Armenian archers using giant "leg bows" to battle Alexander the Great's troops during his invasion - and pretty much beating him*).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Jy6H8DqTg8

One of those tunes that probably doesn't work in a big concert setting, or even on an AM radio while driving down the road. This is made for a small smoke-filled club, or sitting alone on a hot Summer evening watching the thunder clouds roll in. It's another in a long line of Springsteen songs that I think captures the whole urban East Coast vibe of the 70's.

Eric Burdon & War perform Spill The Wine

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i0DMbCKnAg

And it was about this time of year in '70 when this was released. Burdon was battling a bad smack addiction, but managed to hold it together enough to combine with one of the most interesting fusion bands of that time to make a great song. Musically, there's so much going on here, that I hear new things each time I give it a listen. Beautiful. This so reminds me of the sweltering heat of that Summer...

Vintage Virginia Wine Festival coming up

http://manassaspark.patch.com/articles/30th-annual-vintage-virginia-wine-festival

I wish them well, but I have two problems with our local wine festivals. The first may be unavoidable - they are too popular. Twenty five years ago, the festivals were very modest affairs, even intimate. One could wander casually around and actually chat with the wine makers about the details of their offerings. The last couple of times I went, (at least ten years ago), the crowds were so thick that you had to practically elbow your way into a booth to get a taste of vino, with no opportunity to really hear about it.
The second difficulty is that they hold these things in the Summer. It's just too damn hot. You're out traipsing away in a beaten down field in a hundred degree weather, with humidity to match - the sun just baking you. That's no way to calmly examine wine. And it's impossible to enjoy a cab, I don't care how good it is. I wish these things were held in mid to late October.
