Another example of how complex geopolitics can get

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-16287211

One can debate who is good and/or evil, and who is right and/or wrong. But I would remind folks that geopolitics is always messy. Even with the nazis and Japanese coming right out of central casting for ultimate bad guys, we must remember that the Allies were not always sainted. It would be easy to condemn Irish short-sightedness, etc., but please remember that these decisions were being made by people who had just fought the British in their own bloody war for (semi)independence, and already experienced there own atrocities, (look up any good history about the black & tans...). When one gets into the various captive peoples and nations under the Soviets, the world-wide colonies of France, Belgium, Holland, and Britain, etc. etc. - It gets complicated and not very 'black & white".
I would say, (as I've stated in the past), that almost all of these peoples were naive in their understanding or hopes for the outcome. Oh, I suppose the Irish might have been made mere captive peoples, (but still much worse than even a continuing British occupation would have been); but the various Slavic groups hoping for an end of oppression and murder from Stalin would have faced much worse under hitler, as would many of the Asian colonies hoping for better times through a Japanese win.  It gets complicated...

And so, this is Christmas..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h90JVJmPmt0

Another chapter in my long, convoluted, contradictory, and complicated history with the Holiday.  I probably won't be doing too much posting over the next few days.  So I will take this opportunity to wish you, gentle readers, a Happy Holiday, (if and whatever you celebrate at this time of year).  One of the things I like about this time of year, is that it provides an excuse to get together with family and friends, perhaps my favorite activity of all.  Some of you reading this will be part of that.  We'll have fun - we always do, and it means more to me than you imagine.
And for those of you not a part of that, I sincerely hope that you can enjoy similar get-togethers with your own circles.  It's important.  The older you get, the more you'll realize that.
Another aspect of these times, for me, will be remembering those who used to be a part of my life and these celebrations, who are no longer around.  Pop folklore tells us that Halloween is the time for ghosts.  But for me, it's always this Season.  The Manor is full of them.  (Once again - the older you get, the more you'll probably understand this).
And so, gentle reader, I wish you a time of happiness, health, and safety.   See ya tomorrow...

It's Christmas Time!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCNGjKnTzaQ

And nothing says it better than the Star Wars Holiday Special!  Generally regarded as the most embarrassingly bad thing EVER broadcast on TV;  it lurches from boring to cringe-worthy to head scratching inanity with ease.   I heartily recommend it!

Beach Boys Reunion

http://www.nme.com/news/the-beach-boys/61026

I mean, this is nice and all, I guess.  But it's really always been about Brian.  Al Jardine has always seemed like a nice guy, and Johnson is okay, (although a long way from being a "founder" like the article makes out.  But Mike Love is a bitter old dick.  We'll see how it goes, I guess.

Soviet parachutes with retro rockets

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uGfOppQD_g

Neat looking.  I'd be curious how the landing actually goes.  I know that the Soviets were almost obsessed with airborne stuff back in the 30's and early 40's.  The rumor, (probably true), is that attempts were made for manned tanks to even be air-dropped.  It didn't work...

Underground DC

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/in-the-nations-capital-underground-is-where-its-at/2011/11/22/gIQABFo42N_story_1.html

My hometown.  As is usual nowadays with the Post, the article is pretty light.  For instance, it misses out on the Weather Mountain installation, some of our old missile silos and their command centers, as well as one legend that is still debated:  a secret tunnel from the Pentagon to the White House.

Twinkle Twinkle Little Vagina

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/8960584/Toddlers-banned-from-making-rude-star-sign.html

This is one of those situations where I start to wonder about people's perceptions, judgement and motivations.  I mean, if no one had taken the time to bring it up, this whole thing would amount to less than nothing.  But now, loads of people, myself included, want to know what these hand gestures are, etc.

Toyota's vision of the future

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4k0i0c2LWw

What's most interesting to me about this is how downright uninteresting that I found it.  Basically, great tubs of cash and time are going to be spent making my (very expensive) car a little light show.  This reminds me of those old hi-fi speakers you could buy from Lafayette Electronics that had little "psychedelic" lights in the speaker screen that would pulse with the music, (maybe...).  Pardon me while I yawn with delight.  Like so many other car commercials, this seems devoted to boys too young to drive a car (holographic babes chatting me up as I drive - give me a fucking break).  I'd be more interested in something that has a very low carbon imprint, both in it's manufacture and its operation, something with interesting safety features; and of course, laser beams to destroy those who are in my way.

I've said it before:  flying has become nothing but a series of worries, hassles, injustices and insults.  Virtually anywhere East of the Mississippi that I plan on visiting are going to now involve car trips.  As tiring as it gets, it's still worth it to me to avoid what flight has become.

hitler's hot in Qatar, apparently

http://www.thenational.ae/thenational/thenationalconversation/industry-insights/retail/fury-as-virgin-megastore-recommends-hitlers-mein-kampf

My ol' penpal, Infidel757, just posted a disturbing story about Russian nazis. And now this. Yes, I'm sure that many Arabs are all delighted with the antisemetism, and I know that adolf wasn't above trying to gain some Arab support during the war.  But the fact of the matter is that it's well known that Germany and Italy both had imperial plans for the region, and scant regard for the people living there.  Just because someone hates who you hate doesn't mean they don't hate you just as much.  As for Virgin, I agree with the person in the article. Carry it, but don't promote the damn thing.   It's an important book and should be studied by anyone seriously interested in modern history, political philosophy, and evil, (I've read it twice).  But to make it the bluelight special...  Shame on you bastards...

Bowie performs Heroes

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tgcc5V9Hu3g&ob=av2n

My fave song by him.  It was around this time, in '77 that this video was made, for the last Bing Crosby Christmas special.  (Bingo had died by the time it was aired, if I remember correctly).  The whole shiny bleakness of Eno's production is just a perfect fit for the hopeless, romantic, spit-in-your-eye desperation of the song.  It was appropriate then, and now....

fanvid for The Moody Blues performing Thinking Is The Best Way To Travel

The return of Karl Straub to Rock'N'Roll!

http://karlstraubmusic.blogspot.com/2011/12/karl-straub-has-finally-written-bunch.html

Karl's an old acquaintance of mine, and one of the finest songwriters to ever come out of DC (along with Mary Chapin Carpenter, Marvin Gaye and Jim Morrison).  His CD's while performing with the Graverobbers are all excellent, and the ultra-limited edition Christmas cassette he put out is a minor classic and has become the traditional soundtrack for us decorating the tree here at the Manor.
