Count Gore De Vol!

http://www.countgore.com/

The Count is DC's own Ghost Host institution.  Now online, every week he presents a new horror movie, along with a bunch of other features devoted to fans of the genre (including interviews, book reviews, etc.).  And with us entering the Halloween Season, I hope you'll check out his site.  Fun stuff!

Gothtober Begins Tomorrow!

http://www.gothtober.com/

A wonderful site that I've been visiting for years.  Every October a new selection goes up.  They solicit short films dealing with Halloween, and for each day of October, they post a different one.  Now, I'm not saying that I've enjoyed each and every one, but there's always something of interest going on.  It's well worth you checking out.  There's real talent here!

The REAL story behind The Exorcist

A house for the atomic age...

http://www.retronaut.com/2014/08/house-for-the-atomic-age/

The thinking here seems to veer towards stupidity.  A huge glass window is all that's between you and death, with the supposed advantage being that it can be "easily replaced".  By whom?  With what?  Those shards are going to go ripping through your pathetic curtain like a threshing machine when the blast hits.  Your precious swimming pool will instantly turn to steam, boiling the strips of meat left of you after the glass has pulled a veg-o-matic on your sorry ass.  This place will look like the jerky factory from hell.

Last day for picking blackberries

A Scottish holiday - The last day for picking blackberries because the devil poisons them today by urinating and/or spitting on them at about this time of year (also is associated with Old Michaelmas Day, October 11, in parts of England).  One reason given for this behavior is because he fell into them and decided to get his revenge.

Back from Vacation

Back home!  Went on a little vacation to Southern California, mostly to visit with friends and cousins that I have scattered all across that region.  It was a great time, (Thanks, Folks!).  Besides socializing, there were a few things of interest that I visited:

1.        The Integratron is one of the great monuments to the UFO cults of the Fifties and Sixties, now transformed into a sort of New Age center.  http://integratron.com/

2.       The L.A. Arboretum is a very interesting and relaxing place to wander around and admire its plants and gardens.  The section devoted to Australian plants was my favorite.  www.arboretum.org.

3.       The Fess Parker Winery and Inn. Great chardonnay, and a wonderful place to stay, in the pretty town of Los Olivos.  http://www.fessparkerinn.com/  & https://www.fessparkerwines.com/

4.       Pismo Beach – a fun beach and resort town.  http://www.pismobeach.org/ Go for the walk and view on the pier, stay for their famous clam chowder.

5.       Morro Rock – the plug left by an ancient volcano.  Really beautiful, and quite impressive http://www.slostateparks.com/morro_rock/

6.       The Stone Brewery Store in Pasadena - https://www.facebook.com/StoneStorePasadena.  I have yet to get to my favorite brewery’s headquarters, but this was a nice substitute. Finally got to try the chipotle smoked porter:  Yum!

7.       Walked around downtown Pasadena, and this instantly became my favorite shop in the neighborhood – http://goldbugpasadena.com/

8.       A great place to shop for Halloween, (and other Holiday) decorations - http://www.christmastraditions.com/Themes/HWeen/TradHall.htm

George Harrison Box Set Coming Out

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/george-harrisons-first-six-studio-albums-to-get-lavish-reissues-20140902?utm_source=regular&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter&email=mendip@gmail.com

Sigh...I really want to like this, but the fact of the matter is that George was a maddeningly inconsistent artist.  All Things Must Pass was his only truly great album.  The ones following that are full of filler material.  Wonderwall is boring as hell, and Electronic Music is dreck.  There was an interview with George a few years before his death.  I forget the publication, although I suspect it may have been Goldmine Magazine.  It came across clearly that he wasn't 'hungry' for success or recognition, musically speaking, even the interviewer commented on that as an afterward to the article.  And I think that started immediately after ATMP.  He'd made his point - a great album with numerous hits and some fine songs that weren't; and after that, it was just a matter of doing whatever he wanted, generating maybe one hit per LP, without regard for much other than personal reasons.  There's nothing wrong with that, but there's also little reason to go out and spend bucks on it, either.  My recommendation is to definitely buy ATMP, and then get a Greatest Hits compilation.  You'll listen to them.  I doubt anyone is going to give most of this set more than one or two sittings, except for what's covered in my recommendation.
