This is seriously going to be the new "in term" around here for the next few weeks.

This is a wonderful source for all students of 20th century military history.  Hart was one of the architects of tank warfare.

The Manor VS The Derecho

http://kingstowne.patch.com/articles/two-killed-friday-in-northern-virginia-as-severe-thunderstorm-hits
http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/dc-thunderstorms-knock-out-power-across-region-leaving-2-dead/2012/06/30/gJQAB9MbDW_story.html?hpid=z1

We are safe here at the Manor; in fact, our immediate neighborhood appears to be something of an island of calm amidst a lot of damage.  The wind and lightning were quite fierce last night.  And I'd say that the gusts were in the 70mph range, (the highest that I've ever experienced directly).  As you can see from the fist link, we are now using the term 'derecho' to describe what occurred, (a word that I've never heard of before today).
There are now at least four deaths attributed to the storm and over a million folks without power, and our phone system is completely screwed up, (I'd guesstimate that it's only operating at about 20% of capacity).
At any rate, for those of you in the outlands, that's the current situation here.  The main problem is that there's a possibility of more of the same early this evening.  We'll see what happens...

A new biography on Zhukov

http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/stalins-general-the-life-of-georgy-zhukov-by-geoffrey-roberts/2012/06/23/gJQAwECmxV_story.html

A great general.  I'm glad that this review highlights the amazing costs and contributions the Soviets made to the War.  Americans tend to get a VERY one-sided view of things.  I hope that the book covers well one other aspect of Zhukov's career, one that is often overlooked, even by military historians.
When asked what his most important battle or campaign might be, folks would summon up a variety of answers - the seige of Leningrad, the defense of Moscow, Stalingrad, Kursk and on and on.  And they're all damned impressive and important.  But they all pale besides a little know shooting match - the Battle of Khalkhin Gol, in Mongolia in 1939.  There, the Soviets and Japanese fought a fierce campaign for what would ultimately be the control of the Northern parts of the Far East.  And Zhukov slaughtered the Japanese forces so badly that they declined to go at the Soviets any more, despite hitler's entreaties in 1941.  That fact allowed the Soviets to transfer forces from the Far East to Europe and win the early victories at Leningrad and Moscow, which in turn led to the later victories that ended the War.  It's weird and disappointing how something so important is ignored so much.  One could argue that WWII was won in an obscure (to the West) battle in the Mongolian wilderness.  A Japanese invasion of Siberia would almost certainly have turned things the other way.  Zhukov's leadership and his mens' determination and bravery stopped that possibility from occurring.
This is one of those wonderful historical instances where something that is seemingly obscure and disconnected from events becomes a linchpin in our lives.

The fight for a universal library

http://www.technologyreview.com/featured-story/427628/the-library-of-utopia/
I've begun to despise the suits and their control of what's going to become eternal copyright.  And what's going to happen is that someone in some State beyond international law is going to be thwart it.  There will be a web site in Taiwan, or Nigeria, or some spec of an island that'll figure out a way to make bucks with this, screw all the copyright holders and make everything available online, one way or another, perhaps with some new technology or kink to the Internet that we aren't aware of yet.

http://www.savetheelectricmap.com/

I, for one, find this predictable and disgusting.  The electric map was a part of my childhood visits to Gettysburg, and in my last excursion there in  2003 I still found it informative about a fairly complex topic.  It gives one a good view of the geography that so influenced events then and there.  Save the whiz-bang effects for Hollywood, this was good history.  (As an aside, it's interesting to me that someone administering a site devoted to Blue VS Gray over Black & White issues is claiming to be color blind....)

The last of the reunions for the 5th

http://bangordailynews.com/2012/06/17/news/bangor/wwii-5th-armored-division-holds-last-ever-reunion-in-bangor/
Of course, there is nothing unusual about this.  We grow older, and sooner or later, we die.  I post this article not because it's unusual, but because it's quite expected.  And I tend to shy away from the "Greatest Generation" moniker.  Who knows?  Each year has had its own challenges and been met by at least some people, even at the cost of their lives.  It's a game I want to steer clear of.
But, I will say that for me, they are the folks I most look to, (that and the generation involved in the Revolution).  I consider myself both lucky and privileged to have grown up, listening to the stories of my parents, and their friends and relations.  In some ways, the keystones of their lives are a part of my own, now.  Equal to the events in my own time, they influence my views and my reactions.  Almost all of those folks are gone now. I miss those guys, and appreciate the sacrifices they made, and what I've learned from them.

I'll always remember...I was around 7 years old and I got the mumps.  Actually, it was worse, I got it twice, sort of.  Half the side of my face got infected, and when it started to clear up, then the other side came down with it.  My typical luck.  But one good thing happened.  The doctor told my mother to get a blender and make me milkshakes - about the only thing I could 'eat'.  She did so, and it made a bad situation a whole lot better...

Fascinating!  But I wonder whether or not it's practical or economical for anything other than political assassinations and the like.  At this point we seem to be talking about small missiles.  I also wonder if such technology, attached to flying drones, will add a further dimension to traditional sniping.

I've always found this topic interesting.  Unlike the article, though, I wonder if there might be something to the physical location causing this syndrome in a small group of people.  A sort of earth energies/feng shui effect that is unknown to us, to date, but that might effect the brain chemistry of certain individuals.  Or, on the other hand, we might just be getting a whole glut of messiah's, and we just keep 'treating' them until they renounce their nature......   ;)

Collecting sand for D-Day
