A plug - for a Religious Experience on Facebook

http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/RELIGIOUS-EXPERIENCE/165084936827?v=wall

As many of you know,  I love the salsa from the Religious Experience Salsa Company out of Grand Junction, Colorado; particularly their top of the line brand - The Wrath Of God.  If you've visited the Manor, you've undoubtedly been served this at some point or another.  At any rate, they're trying to get a bigger presence on Facebook and have called for their fans to promote this effort.  So here goes, if you're into Facebook, and into great salsa, please check 'em out.  I really like these guys.

RIP Tom DeBaggio

http://www.npr.org/2011/02/22/133971224/Alzheimers-Advocate-Thomas-DeBaggio-Dies

If you're into herb gardening in the mid-Atlantic region, DeBaggio was the expert, with a near cult following.  He started working out of his home and yard in the center of Arlington, which becmae more and more crowded with each passing year, finally moving out to relative country-like room in Loudon.  He was THE expert on herbs.  To be honest, he was not Mr. Personality, although that detached demeanor lessened after he was diagnosed.  But the son is keeping the business going, and I do recommend it to any gardeners in the NoVa area.

I'll also point out that his home, Mt. Vernon, is one of my favorite historical sites, and one that I always recommend to visitors to DC.  To a careful observer, it's one of those places that can tell you a lot about the guy who built it.  It's also in one of the prettiest loacations in NoVa.

Looking Glass performs Brandy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-dleViv2nc

An almost quintessential early 70's top 40 hit.  Late Spring of '72, if I remember correctly.  There's a great story in this song, one of the elements that made it a hit.  One of those tunes that sounds even better after the third bourbon.  Brandy, here's to ya!

fanvid for The Soft Boyse performing I Wanna Destroy You

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VAt7hK_zKr0

Always liked this band.  Even now, they're unknown to all but the cognoscente; in the late 70's there were about five of us in the States who were aware of them.  The best of late 70's British neo-psychedelia.

Interstate 95 is closed - DUE TO BRUSH FIRES!

I must confess that this is unprecedented.  The continuing high winds are to blame.  The areas closed are about 15 miles south of us and another 30-40 miles North.  We were just returning home and could smell smoke - wondering who'd have a grill going on such a windy day.  Apparently we were smelling the fire to our South.  Very strange.

Still here

Well, the Manor was rocking away most of the night with our wind, but we still stand defiant.  The blow is to continue (with up to 60mph gusts) all through today.  There are already over a thousand power outages throughout the region.  Pepco (which theoretically supplies power to many of the folks North of the Potomac) has already started it's propaganda war of lies and claims to be "ready" for this storm, (ready to reap huge profits from non-delivery of services).  Folks in Maryland will be lucky to see the lights come back on by May Day, given the historical record.

Cool!

The Jackson 5 perform I Want You Back

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_5hQ8cEE7Q

I know, it's sometimes difficult to remember a time before he became America's #1 freak.  But this little kid was incredible.  One of the last great Motown acts.

fanvid of Ananda Shankar performing Jumpin' Jack Flash

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GnFci5UQKuU

I'm trying to get the brain cells to focus, here.  If I remember correctly, he was Ravi's nephew, and went on to a pretty good career in Indian soundtracks and pop.  But this was off of his big attempt to crash the American market, (which failed miserably).  Nevertheless, I always liked his fusion of Indian and Western musical styles.

Nancy Sinatra's video for Sugar Town

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pjsh2j7W6Bo

I just love everything about this - the song, Nancy, that go-go outfit.  This is soooo 1966 it just hurts.

Chubby Checker performs Limob Rock

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKu0ZFZ7rp0

One of the first pop 45's I ever owned.  If you went to a grade school dance in the early to mid 60's, this was a standard.

fanvid for Humble Pie performing Rolling Stone

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dw0XWttXO3I

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HAUx_uSud4&feature=related

Wonderful song.  I remember when Rockin' the Fillmore came out, and I just listened to it over and over again.  Marriott's screech was just perfect.

fanvid for Al Stewart performing Russians & Americans

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYpJFaijisg&feature=fvwrel

Good song by one of my fave artists.

The 8-Track Museum

http://www.npr.org/blogs/therecord/2011/02/16/133692586/8-track-tapes-belong-in-a-museum?sc=nl&cc=mn-20110217

I was never a huge fan of 8-tracks.  I always preferred cassettes, even in the late 60's before that was popular.  But it is amusing to see any nostalgia regarding them.  And there are artists I'd always associate with 'em:  ZZ Top, Alice Cooper, Deep Purple, etc.  and another thing - remember the trash?  You kids won't remember this, but I swear it's true. The things would break, (and they were generally used in a car), and they'd get thrown out.   EVERY single intersection in America had hundreds of yards of 8-track tape glistening away on the curbs.  Lord knows where it all went.  Probably washed down to the ocean where it's strangling dolphins in some sort of ecological imitation of the Kali cult.  We live in a strange world.

The Commute From Hell - The Aftermath

http://www.wtop.com/?nid=41&sid=2274452

As predicted, nothing is going to happen and nothing is going to change.  the fact of the matter is that the infrastructure has in no way kept pace with development in the region, and the region's development has not followed any type of plan, We have a subway system that was designed for the area as it was in 1965, and a road system that was made for 1980.  And every day, and new office building and housing development, puts those systems further in the hole.  There is only one thing that will help, and that's not going to happen - for the Federal Government to spin off it's offices to around the country (getting 'em out of here) and impose draconian zoning as to what else can be built here, and where.  Since that isn't ever going to happen, we should just get used to near-permanent gridlock around here.  And if all the terrorism "experts" ever get their wet dream of a major attack/bomb/whatever going off Downtown, you can kiss your ass goodbye.  All this blather about doing better and evacuating the city, etc. is just purest bullshit.  I can't drive down Route 1 on a good day without wishing I had a M1 Tank....

(A further irony - there's been all of this talk about the local school systems incorporating a full-year term for classes.  Probably due to a fear that kids might have fun involving bean shooters or some other WMD if they aren't monitored by government ninnies and nannies. The way our transportation "system" is now running, schools are having to shut down almost at the mere mention of a possible snow fall.  After this Winter's disaster, that will get worse, as systems are confronted by the fact that they can't get children home once the flakes have started falling.  The accumulation of make-up days for all of these snow days will probably take the whole Summer to discharge.  A defacto year-long school term.)

IBM's toy

http://www.wired.com/epicenter/2011/02/watson-does-well-and-not/

I continue to be nonplussed by the whole man versus machine issue here.  Throughout time, humans have been able to build specialized machines that can do specialized tasks better/faster than a human could.  I am impressed with the amount of data and algorithms that IBM has managed to cram into this device*.  But then I've been told it weighs a few tons, too.  Given enough time and money, computers can do impressive things - I'm happy with that, I just don't see it as a larger or new story.  And that gets me to my central point - the whole thing is comparing apples to oranges.  A large part of Jeopardy is hitting the buzzer first.  The machine seems to have the humans beat in this area.  BFD.  I suspect electronic signals were beating human hand coordination before most of this current crop of computer developers were born.  I'm reasonably sure that the humans could have answered the questions as accurately as the machine, (they've been quite successful in the past), but they couldn't compete against "button pushing". Sorry, but that doesn't impress me.  I just don't feel humanity is somehow lessened by being tool users - and that's all this is to me.

*Once again, I detest the computer bewing humanized.  They give it a cute name.  Even the drone writing this article refers to the machine as "he".  Wrong.   It is nothing more than an It.  Do these people also name their toasters and vacuum cleaners?  I (barely) understand folks naming their cars/boats/aircraft.  Perhaps it's because frequently those conveyances were expensive and dear, even life sustaining, and thus worthy of a type of false affection or superstition.  (I suspect cars were named because they replaced horses, who were also named).  It's just a machine, people need to relax about that.

I am not fooled....

It is 67 degrees outside the Manor right now.  It is, in a word, wonderful.  The remainder of our snow is melting.  There's a gentle breeze and the sun is out.  This is not unusual for us.  It seems like nearly every Winter we will get 3-10 days of a "false Spring" like this sometime between mid January and early March.  Plants will start budding, people will  dress down, etc.  But like most lightly given promises, this almost always ends in treachery and disappointment - usually with a sucker punch of an ice storm - killing off the buds and sending us scurrying back to overcoats and mittens.  So, there's no way I'm predicting the end of the Winter doldrums, etc.  But for a little while, it's pretty damn nice outside.

The Gobbler

http://www.lileks.com/institute/motel/index.html

A wonderful site devoted to one of our (now lost) greatest motels.  All of the times I was up in Wisconsin, I regret to never having visited, or even heard of, this Shangri-la.  The commentary on the site is worth the price of admission alone!  But the Gobbler does seem to live up (or down) to it.  I was going to say that it's the Plan 9 of motels.  But that wouldn't be accurate.  Let's face it, Plan 9 was a borderline production at best.  No, this motel is more the equivalent of the Star Wars Holiday Special.  It's a classic, big budget disaster, worthy of cringing adoration!  Enjoy.

Jefferson's Beer to be brewed

Just got this note in the Real Beer Newsletter (which I recommend to all imbibers):

MONTICELLO RESERVE ALE BASED ON JEFFERSON RECIPE
The Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center in Monticello is teaming with a Virginia
brewery to produce Monticello Reserve Ale. Nearby Starr Hill Brewery will
brew the beer. The partners say the recipe, which will include wheat and
corn, is based on what was consumed regularly at Jefferson’s Monticello home.
Brewing beer was among the plantation’s important activities, and the beer
was one of the "table liquors" served with meals. The ale will make its
public debut at the center’s museum shop on Feb. 21.

Bowling bitching

A couple of weeks ago, I purchased a new bowling ball to replace my old one, (to make a long story short - I need a lighter ball).  The shop was very nice and I'm happy with the new ball, etc.  But I was hoping to find a simple BLACK ball - just like my old one (which in turn was one of my Father's old bowling balls).  No psychedelic swirlies, no star bursts, no advertisements for the company - no nothin' - just black.  And they're not made.  I begged the clerk to show me something that didn't look like it came out of a gumball machine.  But that's all there is.  I got a swirly blue thing - as conservative as I could find.  It's okay.  But I feel like I'm back in fifth grade.  I half expect 'em to put gutter guards in on the lanes so that I won't gutter it and end up crying.

Sigh, more wussiness....

Ah yes, the oh-so-moral and peaceful Swiss...  I wasn't familiar with this particular rodent, but long-time readers of this column will know of my opinions regarding the "Three S's" in WWII (Spain, Sweden and Switzerland).  They were all gleefully pro-nazi and helped that war effort in numerous and important ways.  We'll never know the full history, but a detailed study of what is out there is already damning enough.  Reidweg is the pinnacle of a very large historical iceberg.

It's amusing to see how undeveloped DC was then for folks to even think of putting a six lane highway through the very center of it with little concern, (I am curious how a six lane highway is to handle Washinton Circle, regardless).  What I begin to suspect is that this is one of those instances where someone who hadn't the foggiest idea of what they were talking about, just started drawing lines on a map.

Wuss America confronts THE THREAT

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/02/01/AR2011020104097.html?hpid=newswell

Show me the worst, most spoiled, most thin-skinned, and biggest baby-assed little hitler - and I'll show you a school administrator.  I have said before and will say again that under today's "boy-in-the-bubble" climate, I never would have made it in school past third grade.  Hell, we had gravel fights in third grade during recess, (I was 7 - half the age of this dreaded ninja of Spotsylvania).  And we're not talking millimeter-sized "pellets*", either.
And have you noticed how both the Spotsylvania Commissariate as well as the pups at the Post go through hoops to avoid an accurate naming of this veritablele Scythe Of Doom that the kid was using?  Well, I'm not - it's a homemade pea shooter.  Nothing more.  A toy right out of "Our Gang", and a staple of 1930's slapstick.  BFD.  Thanks, Spotsylvania.  Thanks for saving us all from an episode with Spanky and Buckwheat.  I feel so much safer than I did a few minutes ago.
I will point out the real purpose of all of this - look how many otherwise worthless bureaucrats are kept employed dealing with this whole brouhaha.  I bet hundreds of man hours were wasted in this investigation, (it reminds me of Arlo's description of the police efforts in the Alice's Restaurant Massacree).  And now, the kid is to go through a YEAR LONG "Diversionary Program".  How many social worker's hours does it take to teach a kid not to show a pea shooter anywhere within sight of a bed-wetting school bureaucrat?  I bet half of Spotsylvania's government budget is now tied up dealing with the "Pea Shooter Threat".  Beats workin'...
In closing, I will direct your attention to a scene from Horse Feathers, one of my all-time favorite movies.  Never before did I realize how dreadfully dangerous it was.  You'll find the part about 4:30 into this film clip to be the most interesting.  But I warn you, for those of you with weak stomachs, or weak heads, (which is to say, a Spotsylvania school parasite, er, bureaucrat) - BEWARE1  BEWARE!!!!!!
