A nice article about the so-called "Hotline"
http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/there-never-was-such-a-thing-as-a-red-phone-in-the-white-house-1129598/?no-ist
One of the last statements in the article implies that the earlier system was infrequently tested, but I don't believe that to be the case. I seem to remember a similar article written many years ago, and the system was constantly being checked. What's interesting about that was that each side would send notes, quotations and passages, where either the origins or the words were obscure, to keep each set of translators on their toes.

Cast A Deadly Spell is online!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhKio_WCDWI
This has always been a difficult or expensive film to see/own. It's an interesting take on the Cthulhu Mythos, combined with a Raymond Chandleresque vibe, and several in-jokes.

An article about the Enchanted Forest theme park
http://www.smithsonianmag.com/travel/how-marylands-enchanted-forest-had-its-own-storybook-ending-1-180956318/?utm_source=facebook.com&no-ist
I only went there once, I think it was in 1964, and only remember snippets of it. But it was a big deal around the Baltimore area, as I recall.

In my opinion, the worst battle ever fought by the American military. Of course, it was to defend DC.

Interesting article about geopathic stress
http://www.theguardian.com/science/head-quarters/2015/aug/20/bad-vibrations-whats-the-evidence-for-geopathic-stress
I've always had a sneaky suspicion about earth forces/vibrations having various effects, including psychological. I even read an article a few decades back showing some intriguing connections between ley lines and spontaneous human combustion!

My Hometown
http://wtop.com/local/2015/08/va-transit-leader-metros-proven-cant-run-operations-keep-public-safe/
Metro has managed to make me afraid to use it. The administrators' action seem more akin to plotting murder than running a transportation system. The idea that the plan for a fire in a tunnel is to assure that any smoke is directed towards and kept within the trains in that tunnel is pure evil.

The Beast of Barcroft is going to be an ebook!
https://www.arlnow.com/2015/08/18/arlington-author-pens-novel-based-on-the-real-life-beast-of-barcroft/
I remember this incident quite well. I actually went driving around that patch of Arlington looking for the beastie at that time. When it was determined to be a civet, that just made it that much more of a mystery, as far as I was concerned - How did such a thing end up in South Arlington?
