Fire & Sound - Fun Stuff!
I've just gotta get one of these hooked up to my stereo and then play some Arthur Brown!!!
Sinead O'Connor & Shane MacGowan perform Haunted
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8oyxrrEk58&feature=related
Two legends perform one of the most beautiful songs to come out of the 80's. Forlorn times and lost thoughts. I need a drink...
Blondie performs X Offender
So cool. I remember first hearing 'em on GTB back around this album's release. What a great station.
The Moody Blues perform Tuesday Afternoon
One of my fave bands. Those seven "middle period" albums are all classics. I remember one summer (72?, 75?) going with my cousins up to Telluride to attend a hang gliding festival. Just lying in a field, surrounded by the most beautiful mountain scenery I've ever seen, colorful gliders lazily drifting overhead, and the Moodys playing on my little Sony cassette player. A perfect day.
The Radiators From Space perform Television Screen
One of the greatest bands you've never heard of. A great pub rock/proto punk band from around '76. I think they recorded on the late great Chelsea label, (along with the Count Bishops, another band that should've made it...).
Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers perform Chinese Rock
Fantastic 70's punk. Another essential.
Paul Revere & The Raiders perform Kicks
A staple on Where The Action Is, I think this was their biggest hit. One of the first Top 40 anti-drug songs.
Happy Birthday Frank Belknap Long!

One of my fave dark fantasy writers. Huntmaster of the Hounds of Tindalos...

Fanny performs Special Care
Great all-female band from the early 70's; almost forgotten now. They were cool.
Happy Birthday Stevie Nicks!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=py3w5fttedA&feature=related
I know Stevie's range is kind of limited, but I've always liked her; and Rhiannon is one of those songs where over exposure has probably hurt it, but it really is a great tune, and using Welsh mythological imagery in a pop song is pretty neat too.

Happy Birthday Meadowlark Lemon!!!
The only guy to ever get me interested in watching basketball. Genius.
Welcome to Sherwood!
Today marks the 70th anniversary of one of my all-time favorite movies - The Adventures Of Robin Hood, starring Errol Flynn. I've been watching this masterpiece since I was a kid - at least 40 times, and love it more and more. A swashbuckling classic! And it features one of THE best entrances in all of filmdom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rwKj7S-ysA Brilliant!

Neat New/Weird Computer Possibilities!
I definitely want a Slime Mold computer!
Happy Birthday Peter Frampton!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BmjFk7i4hyg
I know, he's a great and under-appreciated rock guitarist, and was an important member of one of the great British bands - Humble Pie. But we'll always remember Peter for his live album - an inescapable soundtrack to the Summer of '76. In the long run, it probably hurt his career, and I'm sure he's had his regrets regarding it, but it was a fun album, (and actually represented a nice recap of a multi-album solo career that had been lackluster in the States); and how many artists can lay claim to so dominating a particular time period?

Whoop-ee-ti-yi-o! Get along little doggies!
I confess that it's amusing, sitting here along the Beltway, filling out a questionaire about exactly what part of the cows I plan on burning the brand on, etc. Meanwhile, there are plenty of stray cats and children in the neighborhood; round-up time is going to be amusing..
Happy Record Store Day!
Record stores and radio - those were the coolest things. Radio is shot to hell, (at least in terms of broadcast radio), and record stores are going fast, (at least the good ones). I consider myself so fortunate to have worked at one which, at least for a time, was one of the best. (So did quite a few of you (maybe) reading this - Here's to Pete, Carol, Chris, Doug, Paul, Stella, Debbie, Jane, Sarah, Andrew, Richard, Charlotte, Erik, Mathew, Karl, & Geoff - we had some fun, didn't we?)
Happy Patriot's Day!
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/patriotsday/timeline/index.html
Generally celebrated on the third Monday in April, this is the official day. There are quite a few events in the Revolution that I find quite moving, this is one of them.

People think they're so god-dmaned hip these days. NO ONE is cooler than Senor Wences! The man was a surrealist genius. A guy just talking to a box that says "S'alright". Brilliant. Essential.

Chesapeake crab news
Sad news. I see no end to this. Too much of everything - people, chemicals, etc., around the Chesapeake. You'll be able to tell your gandchildren about the fun we had at a crab feast, and they'll wonder what the hell you're talking about.
Interview with one of the leaders of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/04/14/europe/EU-GEN-Poland-Ghetto-Leader.php
I'm in awe of those people.
Happy Birthday Gerry Rafferty!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fi2h5lD4yl8
Most folks think of Gerry as a one, or maybe two, hit wonder, which is too bad. While not a prolific recording artist, he's put out some very good albums and tunes over the years. And Baker Street is wonderful - Summer of '78, thinkin' you own the world, tearing down Indian Head Highway...
Happy Birthday Dusty Springfield!

One of the great blue-eyed pop/soul singers. Really moving.

one of my all-time fave TV ads!
I love this sucker! We used to make fun of it at the record store - talking about how many great porno themes were actually from the Old Masters, etc. The English accent is perfect, (everyone knows we Colonials are incapable of appreciating anything beyond some inbred grit banging away on a banjo). So cool - get the 8-Tracks!
more wuss America
I am soooo glad I grew up at a time when a kid was allowed to be a kid... I don't know why all these worthless prisses just don't make a law permanently encasing children in three layers of bubble wrap and smothered in antibiotics. No tag! No dodge ball! Man, I was the KING of dodge ball. Oh, I couldn't throw worth a damn, (no accuracy and all the power of an enraged hamster), but I have a highly developed sense of self preservation and could dodge like there was no tomorrow. Dunder-headed jocks would collapse from exhaustion trying to hit me. And I'm still dodging them today...

wuss America
I'm fascinated how Zero Intelligence is now renamed Zero Tolerance.
parental woes
I've always felt that potential parents need to openly and honestly discuss the religious upbringing their children will receive BEFORE conception, and reach a consensus early on that everyone finds acceptable. Sometimes, compromise is essential. In this case, perhaps the child could join the Bloods. Another possibility is that he could deal crack for each group on alternating weeks. We are all adults here and should act accordingly.
Vidal Sassoon - Anti-Fascist!
I'm familiar with the 43 Group, but had no idea Sassoon was a member!
Happy Birthday Tony Burrows!

interesting little footnote to Himmler's crackpot research
Just finished reading Himmler's Crusade which talks of the nazi expeditions to Tibet. Mildly interesting. One interesting thing that comes across during any study of the Ahnenerbe is the dichotomy in Himmler - bloodless, detail-oriented master bureaucrat of death on the one side, and woolly headed romantic crackpot on the other.

Saturday Morning Cartoons - 1966
I had pretty much gotten away from cartoons at this point, don't even remember some of these. But the cool thing is the YouTube presentment of Super 6 features their theme song, performed by Gary Lewis and the Playboys. When I met Gary, many years later, and many years ago, he was amazed when I brought that up.
Neat stuff on The Ghost & Mr. Chicken
I find that a little Don Knotts goes a long way, but have always enjoyed this movie. The Vic Mizzy soundtrack is great - one of the best. This site has a wonderful rendition of the Haunted Organ piece on it.

the cutting edge of delayed luggage
Does any airline really work well anymore? I don't travel that much by air, some of my decision is based on previous experiences and hassles. At times, my flights have seemed like the slave galley scenes from Ben Hur....

The Ramones perform I Just Wanna Have Something To Do
Great song by one of my fave bands from one of my fave movies, Rock'N'Roll High School.

The A's perform CIA
The Guess Who perform Star Baby
Cold, cold nights in the Winter of '74 playing pinball down at the Electric Circus in the bowels of Hybla Valley. Horrible pizza. Fun song.

Intro to Secret Agent
A very cool intro and theme song, (performed by the great Johnny Rivers). The TV show was and is one of my faves, and starred my boy Patrick McGoohan. Despite his denials, it WAS the precursor to my all-time favorite TV shos - The Prisoner.

Brian sings California Girls
One of the best and most famous intros in the history of music. I believe that's the Wondermints backing him. Should be the state anthem for California.
Jerry Jeff performs LA Freeway
One of the great "Escape" songs. Essential.
The Stranglers perform Get A Grip On Yourself
Sinister carnival music. Winter of 77/78. Dank and dark skies and times. And the Stranglers...
The Barbarians perform Hey Little Bird
One of the great garage bands, featuring Moulty, the hook-handed drummer!
Ace performs How Long
Early pub rock, and one of the few tunes to break into the American market, back in '75...
a nice partial recounting of Swiss "neutrality" in WWII
The Swiss have always had an easy run of it. I always believe we should have invaded in the Summer of '45 and cleaned out that nest of parasites, (for all the talk of an armed citizenry and vast "mountain fortresses", Switzerland's military situation was and is laughable). What the author does not recount is the still semi-secret history of Swiss POW camps where Allied prisoners were tortured. Nor is there any recounting of the many Swiss allowed to volunteer in the nazi military machine. One of the continuing and most nauseating myths of the War is about the so-called "neurtral" countries. Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, Portugal - they were all pro-nazi, they all actively helped Germany and they all lie like rugs about it.
Happy Birthday Nigel Hawthorne!

social losers waste government's time
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23918395/
Sorry, I'm much more concerned about what real people do in real life. As for the mimicking of terrorism - yawn. I've played wargames for years and mimicked Ghengis Khan, Adolf Hitler, and Attilla the Hun. BFD. Real guys with real weapons are what worry me, not some dweeb pretending he's Osama Jr. in a silly computer game/business that's pretending to be important. Go ahead and mess with me in your little electron fantasy, come over to my house and I'll blow your fucking head off. Let's see who laughs last....
