The Austerity Kitchen
http://www.theausteritykitchen.com/
This is a really cool site. The author researches food and recipes from times of want and deprivation - food used for steerage passengers on the Titanic, "iron rations" for Prussian soldiers during the Franco-Prussian War, meals prepared in London during WWII rationing, etc.

A fascinating tale from Siberia. I'd be curious if there were any similar stories from Canada, Alaska, or perhaps the Australian Outback. I know that there have been families attempting to live "off the grid" for decades, now. I wonder if any of them got to this point of isolation.

Frozen Dead Guy Festival is on March 8th!

I've always wanted to attend this, although I think that at that time of year the weather would be ghastly. Nederland is a pretty little town, though.

A neat concept by one of my fave contemporary bands, Well Hung Heart. They film getting together with another band, (in this case, Gram Rabbit), and they commit to creating a recording a song in 48 hours.

Nice little article on pre-Pearl Harbor military actions by the U.S. in WWII

The unmanned weather stations is an obscure little bit of military history that I find quite interesting. And, if I remember correctly, there was a manned station in Greenland for a short while.

The end of an era

I've never been a fan of pro sports, football or otherwise. And I happen to think that the current owner of the Redskins is a pompous, spoiled, and worthless shack of shit. But these guys were always fun, and as the article points out, (but not enough), they used their status in the community to raise a lot of money for charities that really needed it. It was silly, they were having fun, and they were doing some good. I always felt that was what sports should've been like.
