Ghost hunting has been going downhill for quite awhile....and now it has hit rock bottom
http://www.examiner.com/article/playboy-playmates-hunt-ghosts-new-series-pretty-paranormal
I used to do a bit of ghost hunting in my younger years. Unlike what the fakers on TV make it out to be, it's quite sedate - sitting quietly, waiting to witness and capture on film/tape anything that might occur. One tried to conduct as much background research as possible ahead of time, etc. It was a 'quiet' hobby.
I've watched about three minutes of the so-called ghost hunting shows on television, (before turning them off in disgust); and they seem to consist of a bunch of supposedly burly he-men and "professionals" squealing like little girls every time a floorboard squeaked. Rubbish.

If yours is still around, or if you are one, I hope that your relationship is as positive as the one that I had.

RIP L. B. Taylor, Jr.
http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/dailypress/obituary.aspx?pid=170056704
I am very late in finding out about his death and posting it here. I was afraid something was wrong, as it's been some time since I've seen anything new by him in print. Taylor was a master of Virginia folklore and ghost stories. A serious researcher, archivist and writer about those tales. The hobby of ghost hunting as become a blooming hobby in this country, and where once there was a few general books covering the whole U.S., there are now hundreds focusing on individual states and cities. But Taylor was in the forefront, and the most prolific. I don't think any other state's ghosts and legends have been covered nearly as well as his two dozen tomes on the Old Dominion. I consider myself a serious student of this stuff, and he's done an invaluable service to future cataloguers and researchers. He'll be sorely missed.

An interesting article dealing with attacks and defense of the game of Chess
http://io9.com/chess-was-once-deemed-a-menace-to-society-1588675766
I tend to love games, have owned hundreds over my lifetime, and played thousands of rounds. In all but a few games, (Diplomacy, Hearts, D&D, and Conflict), I'd rate myself as 'average' in ability. But I consider myself the world's worst chess player, and confess to finding it dull, (I will leave it to others to determine if those two factors are related). My gut feeling is that the ultimate game would apply to either Go or D&D - and they've avoided the stigma of being extolled and promoted primarily by nut cases and authoritarian regimes.

The call-in
http://www.torontosun.com/2014/06/07/teen-makes-bomb-threat-to-get-his-brother-out-of-his-shift-at-burger-king
Actually, this was nor uncommon when and where I went to high school. It generally occurred on a Friday afternoon, usually in the Spring (nice weather). The figuring was that once a bomb threat was made, it would take 90-120 minutes to clear the school and check it out before allowing folks back in. If timed correctly, the call would lead to the early dismissal of classes - by the time the usual safety features could be finished, we'd be past our dismissal time, there was no point in holding us there. Result - an early beginning to the weekend.

Shelter from the end of the world
http://www.wired.com/2014/06/jeanine-michna-bales/#slide-id-849841
One of my earliest childhood memories was of our family driving by a place that sold prefab shelters - basically large metal containers for burying in your backyard. By the way, does anyone note the fatal flaw in the pictures presented in this article? Four or five of them feature the shelter doors, and they open outward, instead of inward. The one thing about bombs is that they create a lot of ruins. Heavy debris falling on top of a horizontal door, or immediately in front of a vertical one, would probably entomb the inhabitants. Perhaps they'd survive the blast, but eventually die of dehydration. I assure you that all of my secret lairs have the doors mounted correctly.
