Who'd of thunk it?  That little old Toronto would wrest from DC the title of shittiest mayor.  I thought we had a lock on it with Barry.  But I stand corrected.  Congratulations, Toronto!  Here's to you!

I can't believe that DC is only at 80. We should be at the bottom of the list!

The battle of Nauru
Fascinating footnote to WWII - I confess I was unaware of this.  Of course, Nauru has always been a favorite of mine, from an economic point of view.  As the article implies, it's entire economy is based on bird shit.  Really.  In the 60's and 70's, it's per capita income was the best on earth due to that.  I'm told that the shit has run out, however, leaving it a basket case of a country, mostly making money off of money laundering and other bank scams,  and selling its diplomatic recognition of China to the highest bidder, (mainland or Taiwan).  Always on the cutting edge of economics....

The problem with "smart" gadgets

No Poe Toaster
Sigh.  The original Toaster was really the only one.  He was actually known to the curator of the Poe House, so it's not entirely a mystery.  He apparently left the tradition to his son about ten years ago, who didn't treat it very seriously, and gave up on the practice a couple of years ago.  It's okay, a lot of us still toast the old boy; perhaps not in Baltimore in the darkest night, but we still toast him.

Headline (and Issue) of the Day

A nice little article on reading (and collecting) horror fiction

I'd add my boy Clark Ashton Smith to the author's examples...

RIP Dave Madden

RIP, Professor...

The White Rose Guillotine
Long time readers will remember my absolute awe and respect for the White Rose group.  They are giants.  I have always considered it criminal that the media has always focused on the turncoat cowards in the attempted military coup, who loved hitler and murdered millions for him, only turning tail when their precious Prussian estates were threatened with capture by the Red Army.  As far as I'm concerned, the coup was nothing more than a love spat between despicable men - I've got no dog in that fight...  If you want to see the real, and almost only, Heroes in Germany, look to the White Rose.

A Plug - Little Steven's Underground Garage

It's been a couple of years since I mentioned this satellite radio station. And that's a mistake on my part.  I consider this the greatest rock radio station of all time.  Really.  I listen to this thing obsessively when in the car, (where I get Sirius Radio).  If you don't get Sirius, you can still listen to the weekly radio show on your local channel, or online (they're archived on the website).  Little Steven knows and understands Rock'N'Roll as well as anyone that I've ever heard or met.  The station and its DJ's are experts and fanatics. The play a perfect mix of old and new songs.  The one thing uniting them is the Rock (with some R&B).  It is beautiful.   It is essential.

George Takei and Hannah Hart on crowdsourcing

Two of my fave Internet celebrities talking about funding for projects.  Harmonic Convergence time...

Before & After

I find this cute, amazing, and bittersweet.  Growing up, there are a few locations or activities that my Father would insist taking photos or movies of me.  And that has translated into a (very) few of me 40-50 years later in the same spot.   This is a variation on that theme.

Happy Birthday Clark Ashton Smith!

Tee Hee!
I've always hated college sports, which had nothing to do with college and everything to do with sports.  The idea that knuckle draggers are given (and I do mean GIVEN) a college degree because they can win a game is insulting.  I always liked pro baseball, which recognized the value of farm teams, rather than corrupting education to fuel their personnel needs.  Of course, I am swimming against the tide on this.  State supported schools seem to increasingly be managed as if they were profiteering businesses and/or part of the entertainment industry.

The Paradogs of WWII

A neat footnote to the War.

The Guards march on, at the Tomb of the Unknowns
I've said it before, and will do so again, I consider Arlington to be the closest thing to sacred ground that I know of.  The Tomb of the Unknowns is the epicenter of that.  If you ever visit DC, this is in my top 3 recommendations for you.

The other two would be:
The Lincoln Memorial (at night) - I suppose that it's impressive at any time, but nighttime and the lighting give it a particular majesty.  You've got to see it then to experience what I'm talking about.  An additional importance to the Monument, is to stand by the plaque on the steps where Martin Luther King, Jr. delivered perhaps the greatest speech in American history.  You can look out and imagine the hopeful multitude, and the changes that have taken place.

The other essential, (from my point of view), is George Washington's home, Mt. Vernon, a few miles South of DC.  It's a beautiful location, and a wonderful way to spend the day.  But it's also one of those instances where a physical artifact can inform you about the man.   To make a very long story as short as possible.  It shows a man who wanted to control and shape his life and destiny.  It's really fascinating how much a Revolutionary commander against colonialism is reflected in Mt. Vernon.  And my favorite part is in the front entrance way, where Lafayette's gift of the key to the Bastille is displayed.  The symbolism is so cool!

There are many dozens of other places in the DC area of importance.  But if I had to limit it to three, those would be mine.
