The Swiss...Europe's tickbirds...
http://www.haaretz.com/jewish-world/swiss-banks-allegedly-destroyed-records-of-jews-bank-accounts-1.426767
Long-time readers of this column will know of my despising the Swiss and their faux-neutrality. Their pro-nazi sympathies and actions are well documented amongst serious historians; and their vampiric attitudes towards its victims are something that reserves them a special place in hell. Oh, and Sweden - you're not too far behind. Enjoy your sanctimoniousness while you can....

Halloween Decorations On Sale!
Went into Old Town today, and already the little Christmas shop there is displaying and selling Halloween decorations! That's a first. Usually, I don't see any stock until mid to late July. One more little bit of evidence that the Holiday is gaining in popularity, at least from a merchandising point of view.

Balloons over Ft. Ward!
Just got this notice about an event at our local Civil War park:
Civil War Balloon Corps Event at Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site
April 28, 11 a.m.to 3 p.m.
Did you know that the Union Army staged several military balloon ascensions in the West End of Alexandria early in the Civil War? Learn about this little known aspect of Alexandria's history and the Civil War Balloon Corps on April 28 in a living history program held at Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is free to the public. The program is weather dependent.
In 1861, a civilian Balloon Corps attached to the U.S. Army was organized to gather information on Confederate positions and movements from the sky. Although aeronaut Thaddeus Lowe was appointed Chief Aeronaut to command the Balloon Corps, one of his competitors, John La Mountain, was responsible for conducting several balloon ascensions from Alexandria beginning in October of 1861.
Fort Ward's program will feature a reenactor portraying period aeronaut Thaddeus Lowe, who will discuss the use of aerial balloons for military surveillance during the war, and the local history of La Mountain's balloon ascensions. A highlight of the program will be a 19,000 cubic foot netted gas balloon similar to those used during the Civil War. The theme of how technology of the time was used to advance military communications will also be interpreted by reenactors portraying telegraphers and members of the signal corps who will display equipment and present demonstrations. Visitors can also tour the historic Union fort, which features the fully restored Northwest bastion, visit the reconstructed and furnished Officers' Hut, and view Museum exhibits.
Fort Ward is the best preserved fortification in the Defenses of Washington, an extensive system of forts built to protect the Union capital during the Civil War. The Museum offers changing exhibits, tours, lectures, and interpretive programs throughout the year. Fort Ward Museum & Historic Site is located at 4301 West Braddock Road.
For more information visit www.fortward. org, or call 703.746.4848.

A wonderful article about Bruce and the aging of us all
http://www.vulture.com/2012/04/bruce-springsteen-life-giver-to-the-middle-aged.html
I confess that I'm not going to see the current tour, these things are expensive, and the while this guy is bragging about seeing Bruce in the 90's, my frame of reference is the shows from 10-15 years earlier. Oh, I'm sure that the current performance is as excellent as described, but it won't be the same for me. And, as I've mentioned before, there's something bittersweet, (and maybe leaning towards the depressing) about rock shows for those of us well past our prime. To their credit, there are artists who explore that and deal with it in their songs. I'm glad to see Springsteen at the top of that list, one could add Nick Lowe and Roger McGuinn to it, (I'd also point out that one of the first rockers to recognize and seriously care about if one can age gracefully in rock'n'roll was the now-ignored Bob Seger).

The Cyber Threat
http://www.strategypage.com/htmw/htiw/articles/20120403.aspx
Interesting article, but the solution is obvious. For your biggest secrets, and your most secure communications, sacrifice speed and ease of access for near-total security: don't use computers connected to the outside world. Go back to paperwork, couriers, etc. I mean, this worked up to about 30 years ago. I'm not saying put everything out of reach of technology - just the stuff that you're really worried about. I don't care how many tech geeks China has. They can't come over here, break into a gated-guarded-locked-building, break into a locked and alarmed office, break into a safe, and get the secrets therein. That's what they had to do 30+ years ago, and they virtually never succeeded without help from one of the guards. Get off the Net, and you leave the geeks far behind...
