RIP Frank Panton
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/9998602/Frank-Panton.html?fb
Was just informed of his death. To the vast majority of folks he is unknown, but as the article points out, he was a key member of Britain's nuclear interests, (not all of which are listed in this article), and was a close friend of my family's. He was a quiet and kind man, with a good sense of humor, and an easy going manner. He grew up the hard way in being an expert on bombs, disarming them during the Battle of Britain. He never bragged about his heroism, he didn't have to. In fact he always was reluctant to talk about it, even to a youngster with a keen interest in the War. His family and ours grew quite close during his various postings here, and I'll always treasure those memories, Britain has lost a Patriot and my family has lost an old Friend.

We're #1! (I don't care what Slate says....)
http://www.slate.com/articles/health_and_science/science/2013/07/which_city_has_the_worst_drivers_boston_baltimore_washington_d_c_miami.2.html
I'll go with the Allstate ranking, thank you very much. I'd note that Slate drops us down in stature due to the lack of DWI fatalities. There are two reasons for this. The first is that our gridlock (#2 in the Nation), prevents anyone from getting up enough of a head of steam to kill someone. The second reason is that, frankly, DC is a hard drinking town, and experienced in driving under such conditions. I remember one report from about 30 years ago that stated that an extraordinary percentage of drivers on the road after 7PM around here wouldn't pass a sobriety test. So many accidents occur when it's New Year's Eve (or 'Amateur Night', as it's called around here), high school graduation nights, and big sporting events, when the under-experienced over indulge. But the regulars bop right along...

Boo hoo hoo! So, today's kids are too busy (read: too fucking inattentive and downright lame) to be able to go through an entire (gasp!) game of Monopoly?!?! They just can't handle a two hour stint of doing something? Their little brains will explode if stressed beyond the time limit of a hanna barbera cartoon? And, of course, we dare not threaten their fragile eggshell egos by presenting something as harsh as three turns "in jail". Mustn't agitate their sweet little gossamer nerves. Sheesh! I mean, we're just talking god damned Monopoly here, people, not the Glass Bead Game - get a grip!

Sigh. I disagree with Mr. Lincoln on a variety of important issues, and I am certainly not one to deify him, as some have done. But I view acts like this as extremely distasteful. The fact is that the Memorial is one of the most moving sights in DC, especially at night. It is always in my top three places recommended for visitors to our town as 'must sees'. People messing with it are just plain losers and bastards...

American Wineries
http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2013/07/07/business/a-nation-of-wineries.html?smid=tw-nytimes&_r=4&
A very neat chart and article showing how the wine industry has grown in this country. And while the Old Dominion is not in the major leagues, it's nice to see the growth, success and sophistication that's taken place here. But I confess to a rather selfish longing for the early days of our wine industry, in the 80's. You could go to any winery and talk to the owner/manager in great detail about what they were producing. Barboursville Vineyards earn a major mention in this article, as they should - they were my favorite in those early years, (along with Linden). The first time we visited Barboursville, there was no tasting room, or even employees devoted to that task. The wife of the manager invited us into their little office, had us sit down opposite her at her desk, pushed aside some papers, grabbed a couple of glasses from the back room, and poured us some samples on her desk, while I set up a barrage of questions on barrel comparisons, etc. What a wonderful morning! At Linden, the owners, (Jim and Judy Law) got to recognizing us, we visited there so often, and we'd get samples of experiments and upcoming bottlings, (Jim even joked with me about my incessant questions on French VS American oak barrels at one point). Those were the days. Both operations are very successful now, and I'm happy for them. But now you deal with at least a small crowd of people at a crowded wine bar, manned by folks who were hired for that purpose, etc. It's fine, and a natural result of success. But those early days were magical and personal.

Life in DC...
Received a notification from our newspaper delivery person that if we were missing our morning paper, it was due to foxes stealing it. Apparently, this is not a joke. Presumably, they are using the paper to line their burrow. If it's for other reasons, they've made a serious misjudgement - it's the Post that they're stealing - at least go for the NYT...
A plug for Frank Ferrante and Mark Evanier
http://www.newsfromme.com/2013/07/05/todays-video-link-and-frank-ferrante-plug/
I consider Mark's blog essential for all fans of American pop culture. His experience and expertise extends to comics, television and film, (and more...). And his accolades for Ferrante's show about Groucho got me to go see him when he appeared in the DC area last year. At the risk of using an old cliche - Ferrante IS Groucho. As a near-fanatical Marxist, I cannot recommend his show too much. It is essential. And so is News From Me
