Ah, mid-70's loneliness. I always liked this tune. Soft rock gets no respect these days. I understand the reasons, and occasionally agree with them; but there's something about those late Spring sunsets that make them seem quite appropriate.

Perfect song for an early Summer day. There was a time, oh so long ago, when popsters crafted songs for just such a day, and to be heard over an AM radio. Crenshaw is probably the last great genius in that endeavor.

nice little bit of history on Lindbergh's quest for immortality
http://www.wunderkabinett.co.uk/damndata/index.php?/archives/1423-Charles-Lindberghs-quest-for-immortality.html
Id' heard some of this before, interesting stuff. As for Lindbergh being a nazi - he was. The only "debate" is in the fevered imaginations of his acolytes, and the usual array of fascist sympathizers. It's all been well documented in the past, it's simply ignored, as Americans can't believe that the hometown boy who made good was a little goose-stepper.

France At War - another view

It's amusing to see the French complaining about this little sexcapade. Heaven knows how'd they react to the truth about their soldiers in the Charlemagne division of the SS, their defense of the Fuhrer's bunker, etc., http://www.waffen-ss.no/33.Charlemagne.htm . And don't get me started about Vichy...

I suspect what future times will bring is a more gradual and subtle definition of various types of mental abilities and traits (what we commonly and oversimply call "intelligence"). I still believe that such things as IQ are culturally based; and would also suggest that much of what we regard as intelligence is more defined based on having an opposable thumb than anything to do with our brains. We talk about finding "intelligent" life in the universe, but I wonder if we'd recognize it if we saw it...

RIP Dick Martin
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080525/ap_on_en_tv/obit_martin
One could argue that time had passed Martin by. In a way, he and Martin had been too successful. I'd argue that Laugh-In really revolutionized TV, (and not always in ways that I feel have evolved to my tastes). It wouldn't be too hard to trace our current one second entertainment/information attention span to that show. It is an easy stroll from Laugh In's ten jokes/situations a minute to our own current torrent of imagery on tube and computer. It introduced a dozen catch phrases into the popular lexicon, about twenty talents were created or promoted through it, it may even have helped elect Nixon with his one humanizing second of "Sock it to Meee?" A pretty remarkable achievement. It seems tame now, but only because they started a ball rolling that has yet to slow down.

I confess to always having found this song absolutely charming. In saying this I realize that to many it'll be cloying, saccharine, and just plain awful. So be it. But occasionally one is allowed to reminisce about the simplicity of childhood and a certain amount of innocence, (before the rot sets in...), and I think Loggins captured it beautifully here.

Robot Walking!
‘Flame’ is the world's most advanced walking robotWalking robots never cease to amaze, but "Flame" from TU Delft PhD student Daan Hobbelen is what we like to call a mega breakthrough. By mimicking the way that humans actually fall forward when walking, this robot comes insanely close to the real thing. Usually, walking robots are energy-hungry propositions, but this is the first that's both efficient and stable. Inside Flame are seven motors and a balance "organ" loaded with stability algorithms. By measuring each step, the robot adjusts stance width, speed, and gait on the go. In the end, kids, we're looking at the world's most advanced and efficient walking robot. If you want to see this thing in action, click below...

secret strobelight weapon of WWII
http://blog.wired.com/defense/2008/05/wwii-strobe-t-1.html
Hmmm, maybe... I have a few questions - what type of portable generator was available that could safely and effectively be mounted on tanks? How long could it power these effects? I am a little doubtful on strobe lights being immune to machine gun fire, and wonder why they and their generators would also be immune to even moderate HE artillery, (which is an indirect fire weapon)? I'm also curious as to the user's tactics. The strobe effect doesn't affect them? Why not? I know it's supposedly aimed away, but that just means you aren't getting the full blast; is that okay? And one would have to keep a remarkably straight line during an advance so as not to get into the "light zone"- how often does that happen in real life? I have a feeling there were a lot of reasons why this "war winner" wasn't actually used...

Drugs? I like to think it's a human skull, (it's the romantic in me...).

Anniversary of Let It Be (1970)
38 years ago.... I've written about this album in the past. It's gotten a lot of knocks, but I still love it. Two Of Us is one of the greatest love songs of all time, and the film of Get Back is a classic. I miss those guys.

a bad night in DC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMvfAYEaE8c&feature=related
I don't know how much it's rained in the past few days here; three, maybe four inches. And we've got another two or three coming in as I type this. The grounds around the Manor are a total swamp, with rivulets running between large standing puddles. There was one tiny breach by Poseidon into our basement two days ago, but we managed to beat that attack away. The air outside, even under cover, is like a cool steam. It is an unpleasant night, and a time for bad things.

the idiot test
http://bitsandpieces.us/2008/05/10/the-idiot-test/
I got 17 correct. Number six is a fair shot, I suppose, if you're one of those people who considers sports important. I haven't a clue about sports, (although I'm not sure why I'm considered an idiot for not paying attention to it). Number 14 I take issue with, there's no description of the dog's direction, nor that it's running in a straight line. In fact, in all but a tree farm it'd be impossible for anyone to run in a straight line for any length without knocking into a tree. Bogus question. Number 20 is just plain wrong. "President" is a title, the name of the office holder changes with each new person assuming the office. (And Harry Truman was the office holder in 1950).
A few good questions, but it needs some work.

Not a single aspect of the government of the District works or is without rampant corruption. But play a little ping pong and the mighty machinery suddely springs into tiger-like action. This guy's mistake was in not selling crack or running a major scam in the Tax Office - now, that's okay!

My friend Nick just sent this link to me, (Thanks Nick!). I'll let him explain it: "Take the most heavily trafficked photo site on the web. Hook it up to Google Earth. Watch the photographs that people all over the world are uploading with a rotating globe to show where they are uploading from. And the best part -- it's ephemeral. I'd never find those pictures again, don't know the context. It's a lot like Found magazine."

Keith Richards created this amazing guitar rift on this date in '65. Part of my DNA. I don't know how many times I've listened to High Tides & Green Grass, but I'm sure it's in the low four figures. As most of you know, Autumn is my favorite time of year. But that period between May Day and the 4th of July would be my second most favored season. I suspect it's partly a childhood thing - the anticipation of getting out of school and looking forward to Summer vacation. Traveling with my family to Wisconsin, Colorado, California and elsewhere; hanging outside with friends and/or cousins early in the evening with that beautiful June sun creating long lazy shadows, fireworks, playing Kleeba* in the old neighborhood, seeing rock concerts from the lawn at Merriweather, barhopping in Old Town or Gtown, drive in movies at the Star in Montrose, canoeing on the C&O, catching frogs and sailing wooden boats in the irrigation ditch at my Uncle Harry's, picnics at Log Hill, strawberry picking at the Logsdons' home, collecting box turtles, dirt clod battles at Monticello Park - the longer I type, the more things I think of.
I still remember with crystal clarity the last day of school in '65. We only had to go in half a day, and I remember making the short walk home alone, relieved to be away from school for what seemed at that time like an eternity. It was an absolutely beautiful mid-June morning, with a warm sun but a nice little breeze and an uncustomary low humidity. My Father had the day off and was waiting for me to join him to go down to the local tennis courts to watch him play. We were already getting ready to take a trip to Colorado, (which was absolutely wonderful too). It was just a perfect day.
I also remember high school graduation - hotter than hell, but low-key. I think I just spent the evening at home listening to Steely Dan's Reelin' In The Years and looking forward to my first trip to Europe and wondering how the hell college was going to be. Well, college is long gone, and now I really am reelin' in those years. But there's supposed to be some nice weather today and I hope you too can enjoy some nice long and lazy times.

Happy Ducking Day!
In Dartmoor, the 2nd of May was known as 'ducking day' and this was when in early times the village gossip or scold was taken to the pond and given a seat on the ducking stood. Latterly the children of the village or town extended the 'duckings' to anybody that got within range of whatever they were carrying water in.
