This would make driving around NoVa soooo much easier! I'm hoping for the app to include a drop-down menu for selecting ordinance. High explosives should work most of the time, but I'd like the comfort of knowing I can also choose armor piercing or napalm as options. See you on the Beltway!

Happy Birthday Jasper Maskelyne, The War Magician
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasper_Maskelyne
There have been serious doubts cast upon his claims. It seems almost romantically fitting for a stage magician that he should be surrounded in clouds of doubt. I'm not in a position to judge, either way, (although the very respected WWII historian Jim Dunnigan is, and credits Maskelyne's claims). The fact remains that it's a great story.

I guess I should never expect even a rudiment of intelligence or education from nazis - neo or otherwise. But I continue to be amazed at how ignorant so many of them are about what they profess to believe in. Forget about Judaism for a minute, the fact of the matter is that to nazism, the Slavs were viewed as little better. The ultimate plan was for them to form a race of slaves devoted to the hardest and most dangerous labor, treated little better than cattle. The idea that there are Poles worshipping this ideology strikes me as little more than a mental pathology.

Google's "Blacklist"
http://www.2600.com/googleblacklist/
Interesting, although I don't share the writer's view that this is somehow a matter of information being "filtered or suppressed". The fact tha you have to actually hit the Enter Key to get this deeply guarded information is no more than a sign of how lazy computer geeks have gotten, (and Google Instant isn't even that old!). Poor baby! It's also interesting that after accusing Google of this, the writer then says that it's a good thing they're not "evil"!
The solution, of course, is that on anything that interests you, it is important to spend some time and study it from a variety of sources and points of view. Google is not the only search engine, and (gasp!) the Internet is not the only source of information. Fast, ultra-convenient, but not alone. It's not a matter of the owner's of Google being bad or not. They undoubtedly have a point of view, (like everyone else), and it's just lazy to enslave yourself to it, (and then piss and moan about how limited your world view has suddenly gotten).

hitler paintings?

I have a sneaky feeling that hitler paintings are going to become like pieces of the true cross - you could fill a gallery with all of the so-called "Authentic" paintings out there. Still, I've always admired those folks who come up with ideas of how to gleefully detach the wealthy from their money.

nice attack on Lindbergh
http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/201613/Charles-Lindbergh-Hitler-s-all-American-hero
The stuff in the article is well known, at least to anyone who has studied the history of America at that time. I think the important thing to remember is how appealing nazism and fascism were to a whole bunch of folks, not just those in the Axis. And while it is personally appalling/funny to see a whole generation of Germans deny the fact that they were, for the most part, enthusiastic nazis, we must rmember that that type of denial was/is prevalent in virtually all nations. Here, it wasn't just Loathesome Lindy; Henry Ford Sr. was a virulent nazi, he and hitler were warm correspondents and there's some evidence he helped nazi spies. The infamous radio demagogue, father coughlin, was also pro nazi. And many Americans were more than willing to at least make a profit off of them, regardless of the consequences, just look up how IBM got started with punch cards, if you want to be appalled, (Google something like "IBM, Holocaust"). The last president's grandfather was another example. Europe was no better, and a small but vibrant fascist "underground" has existed there up to this day, in virtually every country. Lindy is just the tip of a very large and dark iceberg.

Amazing, now I'll actually be able to SEE the tarmac, as my flight sits idling on it for six or seven hours! What fun! In addition, I can see the baggage handlers rifling through my belongings for any pawnable items, while switching my suit case to the wrong flight! Perhaps they could feed in views of the TSA thugs oggling our naked bodies through they're "security x-ray" and plotting new ways to insult and abuse us. What a breakthrough!

The Ultimate Computer Attack?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/csm/20100921/ts_csm/327178
Fascinating! Although this program is apparently used as sabotage, rather than spying, it brings up something I've been thinking about lately. We might devolve when it comes to important information and/or functionality. That the most important functions and secrets of a government, company or individual NOT be kept on or operated by/through a computer. I wonder if it will come to that, or already has. I keep seeing stories about DOD worrying about cyber-security, etc. That's a problem that didn't exist 40 years ago. In the Olden Days, someone would have to somehow gain access to locked and guarded buildings, break into locked offices and then crack safes to get at the most sensitive information. Now, you need some pimply faced teenager with a bad case of asperger's syndrome to do the same. If I had some bit of super-secret information like the chemical formulae for some sort of metal used in missile technology, or the real name of a spy in the Chinese politburoro, I'd make sure that that document had ONLY been prepared on an old manual typewriter and then locked away in a safe at CIA HQ, (or wherever). Only a high-placed traitor could then get at it. Period. All the hacking in the world would have no effect. To continue on this little whimsy, a factory of 1970 also couldn't be taken out. All the hacking in the world would be so much spitting into the wind to a GM plant in 1968.

What's been gratifying is that over the last few years, some real efforts have been made to get oral (or written) histories from many of these people about their experiences. Some of the military history magazines devote a part of each issue to these personal stories and add to our understanding of those times and their experiences in them.

Happy Equinox!
Ah, my favorite season of the year! It's already cooled down considerably from the blazing days we had here in August. Am not sure how much in the way of Fall colors we'll get this year. It was awful dry towards the end of Summer, and the few leaves already falling are, for the most part, just a dry brown. We'll see.
It's also the time of year when the media can be counted on to publish at least one or two stories about local legends, ghost hunting, parapsychology and the occult. I love reading and collecting such information, particularly if it pertains to this region, (DC, VA, MD, WV, DE and Southern PA). If you come across anything, dear reader, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me know. And if you're interested in the same, I'd direct you to my other blog, Magick Theatre, where I deal in such topics.

I mean, what a great cast and mystery plot! This was custom made for the likes of Peter Lorre, Sydney Greenstreet, and Rondo Hatton!

Fascinating. You can murder someone, and the punishment is to do what I do for pleasure, (and at about half the number of books). Sheesh! Suddenly my lifestyle has become an object of criminal punishment!
"As a result of being found guilty of burglary, the court now pronounces sentence: You will be forced to watch old movies every night while sipping chardonnay."
"The court hereby finds you guilty of rape and will sentence you to one weekend of shopping in the used book and record stores of Charlottesville - and may god have mercy on your soul...."

Back from the Battlefield
Linda and I spend a day down around Yorktown. I'd wanted to go to the battlefield, a place I'd not visited in well over 40 years. It was a picture-perfect day to do so, I'm happy to say. We were nearly alone the entire time, too. I think my favorite part was walking around the field where the surrender ceremony took place. I've read about the event a dozen times or more, and it excited the inner history-geek in me to be trodding the same ground as Washington, Lafayette and Hamilton did on what was one of the most important days in the history of this country.
The town of Yorktown, (which I'd not been in since '75), was also nice - nicer than I remember it. It's a beautifully quaint village of both newer and older buildings. A nice place to spend an afternoon strolling, which is what we did. and this morning, before heading back home, we stopped in at the Pottery Factory, because I believe there's a law stating that anyone visiting the Williamsburg area is required to shop there.
We avoided Williamsburg proper this time, didn't want to spend too much time, (or cash), and I find the crowds pretty tedious.
It was a good trip.

Bruce performs Racing In The Street
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NltljcANCFs
It was when this song came out. The racing scene was going hot and heavy in PG county. One would go to some little shopping center parking lot, (for the life of me I can't remember the name or location). There'd be hundreds of people hanging out, drinking, smoking, etc. They'd pour out of "old" PG - places like Indian Head and Accokeek and the wooded swamps between, (now all transofrmed into suburban sprawl, I'm sure). . And around 1AM the bets would be made and the hardier souls would go off to 295. They'd block off the highway (!) and drag. I never travelled down to those events - that's not me, and it ain't worth getting arrested for, in my opinion. But I always remember those times when I hear this tune, and I think it nicely captures the quiet desperation of that scene and the people in it.

There's probably a paper or book somewhere or another detailing the class divisions and consciousness brought on by the bombing - I bet such a study would be quite interesting, especially going into the 1945 elections in Britain.

Happy Labor Day!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labor_Day
I know that, technically speaking, Fall doesn't officially begin until the Equinox. But let's face it, this is the last day of Summer. Already, many of my younger friends are back in school. Only the most dire of calendar fanatics and holdouts will argue that we can lump the next two weeks into the same Season as June or July. No. It's over.
I suppose it is to the credit of behavioral conditioning that even now, decades out of school, I still get a twinge of dread on this day. The last day of (relative) freedom. In past posts I've mentioned Sly & The Family Stone. I feel their that their hit, Hot Fun In The Summertime is my all-time fave song for the end of Summer. I've listened to it every time since it's release in 1969. Forty one years, a depressing enough footnote, I suppose, for a depressing enough day.

Churchill's letters...

I actually believe that there's something to this story. However, I don't believe the reason is that Winston is praising fascism, (a lot of people did), but because the letters contained offers for a truce/armistice after the disaster of the Summer of 1940. Letters that would influence history's view of Churchill as an indefatigable foe to the Axis. There's a lot of good second hand information about this. But we'll probably never get good first hand documentation that would prove such.
