New ways to relieve wealthy people of their money

Clearly, whoever wrote this article has never been to the Manor for a crab feast. It does not take "hours" to kill them. As for lobsters moving after being boiled or cut, we get into definitions of death that I begin to find tedious when talking about bugs...

A reminder
As many of you know, I love collecting stories on regional folklore, hauntings, and whatnot. And this time of year the media can usually be relied upon to provide at least one story in that vein. If you see something online regarding the greater DC region, (including all of VA and MD, as well as Eastern WV and Southern PA), I'd appreciate you letting me know. And if you're interested in such things, as well as the related fields of parapsychology and hermeticism, I suggest my other blog, Magick Theatre, at http://magicktheatre.blogspot.com/

Another amusing boondoggle. It reminds me of something I always questioned. For a couple of years I used to work over at Crystal City, (a VERY urbanized area of NoVa - nothing but large office buildings, etc.). There were quite a few military offices in the area, and many of the soldiers there dressed in full camouflage for work. Why? I mean, we're talking dudes all ready to go hide in the rain forest in a neighborhood that doesn't possess a single tree! If you really did want to hide, (and why the hell would you?), you'd be better off dressed as an office cabinet or a newspaper box. I always felt embarrassed for these guys - they looked damn silly.

And yet another wrinkle on the examination and definition of intelligence

I've always been interested at society guages intelligence, (or what I prefer to call "Mental Abilities"). I think such analysis and definition are going to become subtler and much more sophisticated over time.

The Continuing Mystery of Rudolf Hess....
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1323674/How-MI6-spy-lured-Hitlers-deputy-Rudolf-Hess-UK-imprisoned-life.html?ito=feeds-newsxml
I would completely agree with the assertion that Hess's flight is one of the greatest mysteries of the War, and the 20th century, in general. But this article, if not the book, has several large holes in its arguments that I find disturbing. First of all, there appear to be few if any first-hand interviews with those in the know, just their children. And there's no mention of any type of documentary evidence. Under such circumstances, I'm afraid we're dealing with the same type of framework as most of the "UFO's have landed" books out there on the market. Maybe it's true - but how to check?
And several statements in the article, (and again, I assume they're based on the book) are borderline ludicrous. Hess was never the #2 in nazi Germany. That was Goering. Hess was the #2 man in the party alone, and as the war picked up steam, that position became more and more obscure and tertiary to the flow of events. In fact, one early theory about his flight was that he was motivated to take it so as to wrest back some of the spotlight from people like Goering and Himmler - being the man to solve the war, rather than leaving it to his more military-oriented competitors in the nazi hierarchy. His capture did nothing to stop the invasion of Britain, (an astoundingly stupid assertion that makes me wonder how accurate everything else in the book could be). The invasion had been called off by 9/40 - never to be seriously considered again. By the time Hess parachuted into Scotland, the German war machine was just about 5 weeks away from launching Operation Barbarossa into Russia - the last thing on hitler's mind was resuming Operation Sea Lion. To say differently is to make me really doubt the credibility of the person writing such nonsense. If Hess's capture altered the war, it was in subtle ways which have yet to be revealed to serious historians.
As for me, I think the whole thing reverberates in a greater mystery from the war - Churchill's (rumored) peace feelers to the Axis in the darkest days of 7/40 to 6/41. Who knows, Rudolf might have been privy to some of these alleged communications, and gone off half-cocked on his own peace mission, (I've never read anything about Hess that didn't leave me thinking he was an idiot). And that is why all the files have been destroyed, in an effort to maintain a "pure" picture of Churchill and Britain facing the fascists, undaunted and alone. But that's only a theory, I suspect any possible evidence supporting it was burned decades ago by all concerned.

Me VS Mao!
My old friend Mike is currently over in China; and he tells me that they've blocked my blogs! At first I was just curious, even amused, at the action, but then I started thinking that probably my most appreciative (and least critical) audience would be folks that can't read or understand what I'm writing. Now we're talkin' serious business - I am picking up the glove!
I'm already considering various strategies to be encompassed in a 5 Year Plan. Perhaps hiding the blog within fake sites, or moving it around to new areas of the web untouched by the Chinese firewall, (I'm thinking of calling this maneuver "The Great Scroll"). Am also considering creating many small sites with various postings, hoping to overwhelm the censors, (under my new motto "Let A Hundred Typos Bloom!").
Being a traditionalist, I've also attempted to launch propaganda balloons against the PRC, (containing my blog entries), but for the first time in my life, seem to lack enough hot air to succeed at something. Undeterred, I'm opening up several new fronts - am cutting waaaay back on the number of Chinese food deliveries that we send out for, have taken to wearing an old button proclaiming "Unleash Chang Kai Shek!", and turn off the TV whenever Connie Chung is on the air. Brutal measures, I know, but war is never pretty, and is not for the weak of heart. We'll see what happens in 5 years...
(Thanks for the news, Mike!)

Live Crab Vending Machine
http://www.boingboing.net/2010/10/21/live-crab-vending-ma.html
I confess that I don't really get this. It's got to cost a lot to buy these things, due to the overhead. And, at the risk of giving you a straight line, what the hell do you do with them once you've got your little pet? There appears to be no way to cook them, and although I'm no expert on Chinese crabs, I'd be surprised if there's that much meat on a single one to begin with.

Happy Birthday Bunnyman!
NoVa ahs more than its share of legends, folklore, hauntings and creature sightings, but probably none has captured the imagination, (or had more bullshit created around it) than the legend of the Bunnyman. He was first sighted on this date in 1970, just a couple miles down the road from the Manor. An excellent monograph on the True story may be found here:
http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/branches/vr/bunny/bunny.htm
But the tale has grown and is more popularly known as follows:

He's still out there. And on the darkest nights, you can hear him, gnawing.....

pissing off (or is it pissing on?) nazis!
http://humanizzm.wordpress.com/2010/10/04/nazis-got-bitchslapped/
I absolutely love this from a couple of different angles. The first of course being that anything that jerks a nazi's chain is a wonderful thing. And secondly, that the town chose to honor the White Rose - the REAL resistance to hitler. I, for one, am sick to death of seeing von stauffenberg and the other hypocritical cowards in the wermacht deified - they were not anti-nazi until they started to lose. I could go on for several thousand words detailing the reality of those fools, but will simply end by saying in a conflict between them and hitler - I've got no dog in that fight.
On the other hand, the White Rose is a gentle, and all-too delicate flower amidst German society, with a bravery born not out of some fear of losing their Prussian estates to the Red Horde, but to some of the highest and noblest ideals of humankind. Yet, they're ignored, and a bunch of murderous thugs and cutthroats trying to save their own necks get mega movies and breathless TV shows devoted to themselves. Bravo to the town of Riese!

NoVa burglaries
For those of you out in the hinterland, we've been suffering a bit of a crime spree here. Over 100 burglaries in the last few weeks have been blamed on the same perpetrator. Pretty impressive. What's even more interesting is that no one has seen "him", and "he" has left virtually no clues. I use the quotation marks because whoever is doing this is obviously an expert at not being noticed or appearing suspicious. A middle aged white woman in a fancy jogging outfit would fit such a niche in most of the up-scale neighborhoods where the burglaries have been committed, (they almost never take anything but cash, one wouldn't need a satchel, or even a vehicle, to carry the haul). My second guess would be someone with a Cox or Verizon truck. The damn things are everywhere, hooking up or repairing cable lines; and the disguise comes equipped with a full tool belt and ladders - perfect for entering homes. I'd be interested if either company has sold off or is missing any vehicles lately....
At any rate, we'll see what happens.

My only reaction to this is probably one shared by you: My gods! Someone is STILL using fountain pens! I honestly don't think I've seen one in use in close to 45 years, and have only used one a very little bit when I was in grade school, to write personal letters. I am amazed that YOUNG people in Britain are being taken to task now for them.

This monstrosity was built where it was for one reason - corruption. Someone, somewhere, got a huge bribe. To make a long story short, there was not the slightest consideration given, then or now, as to how people are actually going to get to it, and where they will park. The area is already the site of massive congestion, this will make it impenetrable. And it will affect an area at least 1 1/2 miles around, maybe more. When this worthless boondoggle finally yawns open, we will finally see the DC area beat out L.A. for worse traffic in the nation - and not by a small margin. The closest thing they'll have is the La brea tar pits - which we will soon resemble...

Actually, this is quite historical. If one wanders around Old Town Alexandria, one will see (faux) antique metal fire plaques placed prominently on the fronts of many homes. They are replicas of the emblems that the earliest fire companies placed on homes who'd paid their fees to the insurance-run companies to protect them from fires. No payment = no emblem = no fire company help.

I would add one more that I saw up in Burlington, Vermont at the Magic Hat Beer that my friend Chris had taken us to. It was an old cigarette vending machine that now sold poems. They were written on small sheets of paper that were then wrapped around wooden blocks the size of cigarette packs, (which was what the machine was designed to accommodate). Pretty neat!

I remember many years ago when someone took the time out to analyze a photo of the medal encrusted vest of another dictator, the cannibalistic Idi "Hamburger Helper" Amin. Some of the medals were determined just to be made up entirely, but one was for the Mercedes Benz owner's club! We may now add the Nebraska Navy* to the list of tinpot dictators' many aspirations. To quote Bugs - "What a maroon!"
*This reminds me of a little irony of WWII. During that time, the nazi ally (and land-locked country) Hungary was ruled by Admiral Horthy. Of course, he'd gained his rank years earlier while serving in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, (which DID have a seacoast and navy...). But it does look a little odd when studying things in the 1940's.

Cops are so amusing. I'm not sure the proper response to being asked about a naked man wearing a pumpkin is to say "I'm Ready..." There's a whole backstory to this. The guy was a Jim Morrison soundalike who put out a mysterious album with no information on who he was, etc., hoping to cash in on the whole "Jim isn't really dead" fad of the mid 70's. It's actually a reasonably good album.

Happy Birthday to American Pie!
I know it was released in Ocotber of '71, but don't have an exact date, so this'll have to do. One of my fave songs, a mini-history of McLean's love affair with rock'n'roll. Wonderful tune, one of my faves.
